20 years ago today, Apple announced the switch to using Intel processors in Macs.

A thoroughly great read for anyone interested in Floppy Disc Controllers ( FDCs ). This deep-dive lifts the lid off the Intel 8271 and reveals something very special "It's a massive chip, encompassing dual cores and a Javascript like execution model." scarybeastsecurity.blogspot.com/2020/11/reve...

When I worked at Software Creations we used an in-house Editor/Assembler to create our NES games ( PC-ED ). This video shows NES Wolverine ( 1991 ) being assembled. The NES development system was attached to the PC via a parallel link and the object code was deployed to the NES for testing.

Nerds rock.

If you're like me, #Populous was your first introduction to the idea of a god sim...as it invented the genre. We were in on the ground floor, people! @gamesthatwerent.com has uncovered a lost #NES version of the game! Full skinny: shorturl.at/jcNlY #EnebaIndependentGamingNews

Despite having a third the speed and a different processor entirely, Sonic the Hedgehog (SMS) was successfully ported to a Commodore 64 - and the music and motion look great on the old breadbox.

Don't get upset, it's just a syntax error. (Source.)

Was the Gradiente Expert a MSX machine? If you asked their laywers, they'd say no. If you ask everyone who patched MSX games to run on the Expert, they'd say yes.

Among the first purely electronic (rather than electromechanical) computer, Whirldind I was a nine-ton beast loaded into 98 dense racks.

It's time computers got friendly again.

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

A great view of the Blok Ya launch table adapter and the hot end of the Energia-Buran stack. "Civil Aviation", 1989, No. 4,

Explain you username My real name/initials will remain a secret 🙃 The "ST010" on the alias came from the ST010 (aka "SETA DSP" - NEC μPD7720) used on a few SNES games. The "14" at the end of the name was a suggestion by Twitter/X... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEC_%CE...

Hi! It's me. That youtuber who is obsessed with heat pumps and teaches you about how the stuff in your life works, often with snark! While I don't have fancy verification set up yet, recent vid descriptions include a link to this account and it's on my channel page www.youtube.com/@TechnologyC...

Speculative sampling accelerates inference in LLMs by drafting future tokens which are verified in parallel. With @vdebortoli.bsky.social , A. Galashov & @arthurgretton.bsky.social , we extend this approach to (continuous-space) diffusion models: arxiv.org/abs/2501.05370

This is excellent - crammed with practical advice about how to build useful systems that use LLMs to run tools in a loop to achieve a goal. Wrote some short notes here: simonwillison.net/2025/Jan/11/...

From @gershbrain.bsky.social, Ila Fiete, and Kazuki Irie, a discussion of key-value memory in the brain: arxiv.org/abs/2501.02950 I'm super on board with this - I suspect it is critical to actually understanding our ability to recall anything volitionally (i.e. not due to a prompt). 🧠📈 🧪

Reminder for the new semester that you can’t detect AI Researchers secretly added AI-created papers to the exam pool: “We found that 94% of our AI submissions were undetected. The grades awarded to our AI submissions were on average half a grade boundary higher than that achieved by real students”

Sam Altman: “We are now confident we know how to build #AGI as we have traditionally understood it. We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first #AI agents “join the workforce” and materially change the output of companies” blog.samaltman.com #AI #GenAI
