Because with social media there is no filter between the crazy and the public. It’s true that old media often censored valuable and thoughtful analysis. But they also kept the crazies at bay. With social media, whatever is most insane wins the algorithm.

The US has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. Each of the 1.9 million people who are locked up is someone's child – and each sentence is a product of far too many backward laws & politics.

Scandinavian prisons - which tend to be different in both design and practice from US prisons - attempt to re-educate and re-integrate inmates. Norway has a recidivism rate of 20%, compared to 76% in the good ol’ United States.

The answer is no. The harder question is when it’s necessary to isolate someone or how to deter bad conduct by those who are free.
But prison on the whole makes people worse, not better.
