Kate Forbes today made her clearest statement yet on zonal pricing. She is no longer hiding her opposition.

On 26th February 2025, Scot Gov ministers held a “deep dive” meeting with officials on zonal pricing. I asked to see all materials related to this meeting, and today received the response. Virtually everything of substance has been redacted. I wonder why?

Kate Forbes has just told the Scottish Parliament that on all those occasions last year when she enthusiastically endorsed Octopus Energy’s call for zonal pricing, she wasn’t actually talking about zonal pricing. Farcical and patently untrue.

“The reason Grangemouth had lasted for as long as it had is because of financial support that we had put in place” - Kate Forbes I asked Scot Gov for evidence…

(1.) Regional variations bounce around every time Ofgem updates the price cap. London happens to have done particularly well out of the latest one. (2.) Southern Scotland, which includes the central belt and the vast majority of the population, pays *less* than the GB average.

“In just eight months, for the SNP, zonal pricing has shifted from a rallying cry against unfairness to a complex risk that could threaten investment and delay progress.” @andrewlearmonth.bsky.social on the SNP’s shifting rhetoric on zonal pricing.

1/ The dishonesty of Kate Forbes.🧵 Since Kate Forbes is now privately arguing against zonal pricing (as reported by the FT on Friday), it’s worth recalling her disingenuous rhetoric on this topic. In July of last year, she explicitly linked the issue with independence.

Actions (rent controls), meet consequences (fewer rental properties are built). If only this could have been predicted.

What a farce. Kate Forbes has frequently pretended Westminster is standing in the way of Scottish consumers reaping the benefits of zonal pricing. Now she is explicitly campaigning against it. (This was always the true Scot Gov position. Forbes was previously being disingenuous.)

Just so everyone knows: John Swinney doesn’t need to do deals with Reform. His party is helped by the rise of Reform, which is why he welcomes it.

Some good points in here. One thing I would add: the upper echelons of the SNP are filled with people whose political opinions were formed when they were teenagers, and have remained fixed ever since. They assume that everyone else is like that too, which is a grave error.

The @scotnational.bsky.social letters page can always be relied upon for the most batshit crazy takes. We may never know for sure, but it seems Nicola Sturgeon was probably a deep-cover agent of the British state, on a mission to derail support for Scottish independence.

If Scot Gov wants to resurrect the GRR bill, yesterday’s loss at the Supreme Court is helpful. But Scot Gov doesn’t want to revisit GRR, so winning would have been a useful way of losing (its own bill) for good.

An era of magical thinking comes to an end and vindication is a dish to be enjoyed at any temperature. So three cheers for the ladies of For Women Scotland. www.thetimes.com/article/d5f2...

When the refineries at Coryton in England and Milford Haven in Wales closed, without being nationalised, was that anti-English or anti-Welsh? No. Only Scottish nationalism has a cult of victimhood which allows its politicians to so debase themselves, apparently without shame.

It’s unfortunate that the pay rise for Scot Gov ministers will, for the time being, go to people who can’t do basic arithmetic. But if it helps to encourage people who can add up into Scottish politics, then it will have been a price worth paying.

John Swinney, refusing to state Scot Gov’s position on zonal pricing. Its genuine position is opposition, but he won’t say that for two reasons: (1.) He doesn’t want voters to know that his government has sided with the electricity generation companies, not ordinary households.

The Scotland tab has been restored in the new @thetimes.com app. The right decision!
