Last day to register and submit your abstract for the West Coast Structural Biology Workshop. Don't miss out!! wcsbw2025.macromolecules.xyz

Our lab’s guide from Light Hall to MRB3. I hope others in @vubasicsciences.bsky.social can appreciate!

I talked to NIH officials, current and former, about what's been happening inside the agency since the Trump administration shut down their grantmaking pipeline in January. Their stories showed just how willing our new leaders are to break the law: www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

Cash lab is hiring a junior specialist/lab manager. Please feel free to reach out to me for details! Link to apply here: recruit.ucdavis.edu/JPF07011 Lab website here: cash4rhogefs.faculty.ucdavis.edu

Save the date in Nashville!

10/10 study sections listed as starting today did not take place. No new post on the federal register as of now. The NIH onslaught continues.

Structural biology is in an era of dynamics & assemblies but turning raw experimental data into atomic models at scale remains challenging. @minhuanli.bsky.social and I present ROCKET🚀: an AlphaFold augmentation that integrates crystallographic and cryoEM/ET data with room for more! 1/14.

Crystal structures are *not* God-given truth. They approximate, w/ flaws & errors, X-ray diffraction data. AlphaFold etc. have been trained on structures, not data. SFCalculator now differentiably connects structures to diffraction data. What does this enable? 🧵 1/4 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Making my first bluesky post to share information about the West Coast Structural Biology Workshop: wcsbw2025.macromolecules.xyz There's still one week left to register and submit your abstract for this exciting conference with beautiful views of the Pacific ocean. Come join us next month!!

@stephanieaw.bsky.social talked to NewsChannel 5 Nashville WTVF saying that funding cuts will have consequences, including stunting the development of new drugs. "This is just going to delay our ability to get lifesaving treatments in the American people's hands."

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

🚨 New preprint alert! 🚨 How does SARS-CoV-2 use as much of its genome as possible to evade our immune response? Our latest study dissects how Orf9b, which is encoded in an alternate reading frame from the N(ucleocapsid) protein, can regulate interferon signaling. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 🧵👇

Congratulations, ‬@rachael-kretsch.bsky.social‬ and all coauthors! This looks to be both fascinating and important. I look forward to reading it. And note:

Curious about how ensembles have shaped our fundamental understanding of enzyme mechanisms? Check out this amazing work led by Siyuan Du, now published! Congrats all! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Co-sign!! Nothing gets me more motivated for the fight than reading amazing science!

Please don’t stop sharing and posting your science because of the current attack on it, it is still valuable and reminds us what the fight is for

No new NIH study sections have been announced in the Federal Register since Jan 21. But I hear that colleagues have been asked to serve. Does your meeting appear in these announcements? If this applies to you, please check and reply here with info! www.federalregister.gov/documents/se...

🔬 Join Jacques Boitreaud, co-founder of Chai Discovery, tomorrow as he explores how foundation models are transforming biomolecular interaction modeling! 📅 Tomorrow, Feb. 17 at 1:00 p.m. 📍 512 Light Hall

Howard University is now a R1 university, the first HBCU with a research one designation. H-U definitely knows!

As outcry builds over Trump cuts to NIH payments, drugmakers are MIA On last night's earnings call, $VRTX CEO Reshma Kewalramani said nothing about the NIH, yet Vertex owes some of that $11B in cystic fibrosis drug sales to foundational biomedical research funded by NIH....

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.

This is catastrophic for US research universities as it ignores the real cost of doing research. The US academic-gov’t partnership forged post-WWII is the greatest creator of knowledge in history and is critical to US economic and technological competitiveness.

Our latest work on tackling streptogramin resistance in collaboration with the Seiple lab is now up as a preprint. We (led by Pooja Asthana) targeted a resistance enzyme, VatD, with fragment-based drug discovery! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

When Trump paused federal funding to all grants and loans, it plunged scientific research into chaos. Though the freeze was rescinded for some sectors, it's still in largely place for universities and research institutions. The damage will be lasting.

Happy Black History Month! #BlackHistoryMonth www.sciencebuddies.org/blog/black-h...

This is going to be a lot of fun! Join us at the ASPET meeting in April! events.rdmobile.com/Sessions/Det... @alexisrohou.bsky.social @stephanieaw.bsky.social

We are committed to working with the brightest and most dedicated people who are smart, innovative, hardworking, and compassionate. If you fall into a 'diversity' category, it’s not that label that brought you here. It’s your intelligence, your creativity, and your strength. Never forget that.

Coot & pizza party!

Great to hear @drstarbird.bsky.social on @npr.org this morning. (Just wish it was a more positive topic!) Federal health agencies told to halt all external communications one.npr.org/i/nx-s1-5270...

Just because it's a homo-oligomer, don't assume it's symmetric! @benjabsnt.bsky.social & collaborators used cryo-EM to study the transthyretin (TTR) tetramer (55 kDa), shedding light on its misfolding pathways linked to amyloid disease. Now in peer-reviewed form: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Are you interested in understanding how the wiggles & jiggles of proteins impact the thermodynamics of ligand binding or catalysis? Well, you are in luck! We are searching for a postdoc to explore these concepts. More details: www.vanderbilt.edu/postdoc/pros... or email [email protected]

This, my dear is the greatest challenge to being alive. To witness injustice in the world and to not allow it to consume our light. Thich Nhat Hahn

Four years ago I wrote my inaugural poem The Hill We Climb. Both when I wrote it and performed it, I did so while continuously reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Coretta Scott King’s legacy.

Do you love all kinds of imaging? Are you a traveler across scales? Do you dream of bringing structure and cell biology together? (Also, ⛷️🏔️anyone?) Join us for this incredible meeting full of state-of-the-art methods, killer bio applications and engaging speakers! (1/2)

Registration is OPEN: The Protein Society's 39th Annual Symposium, June 26 - 29, 2025 in San Francisco. Join us for 3.5 days of protein science, combining critical underpinnings of the field, career development, technical workshops & networking opportunities. www.proteinsociety.org/annual-sympo...

I've been hoping that someone would attempt to train a structure prediction model against experimental data (rather than 3D coordinates), and hopefully this is a step in that direction SFCalculator: connecting deep generative models and crystallography doi.org/10.1101/2025...
