What a GREAT convo starter while standing in line to check luggage?!

Perhaps this is not unique. But the number of systems, libraries, tools, and languages I use on a weekly basis just keeps going up. Careful roll-out increases the steps to complete the job, but reduces outages and tolerates interruptions in work.

All these questions lead to the solution. Don't rely on all these unknown timings and consequences, we should safely migrate the system. Create a new policy, change the services to pick it up in a controlled fashion. We know how to deploy the service. Later we can decommission the old policies.

The disruption to customers will be small, but how much will it be? Should this change happen “after hours”? Is there anything I can do to reduce the window? How could I test this?

But what happens when I apply that change? How long does it take to delete and recreate the policies? Will my service automatically pick up the change, or will it need a restart? What happens to the requests that are in-flight, do those complete or do they fail?

Setting up a new environment, I had a name collision in my infrastructure code: two AWS IAM policies existed in the same account. I needed to update my code so each environment would get its own-named policy. Simple enough, I could add the environment name to the policy name!

One thing people can find in self-defense training is that they themselves are worth defending. Not just the means to do so, but that they deserve protection. Because we do, no matter what the world tells us.

It ended up being The God Engines by @scalzi.com and I'm so so happy to have found it again and tread that unique world and its environs. And to find out there's an unabridged audiobook version means it'll keep me company on the open road someday!

I was searching for "gods emerging from followers" and "spaceships gods fighting pray". Nothing helped -- I was sure it was something from the 80s or 90s that I'd read in periodicals like SF Fantasy or something. Looked through classic SF lists, read indices of collections...

If anything, the horrors of these wars and invasions should have resulted in MORE scars and disfigurement and trauma than is depicted.

Now I want an Aetherdrift-MKM crossover card like Locked in the Trunk (one of those White detention cards?)

Thank you for that! I’ve seen the projects done on such easements and they really do make a difference!

Lovely! Also love the “bar sale” recipe.

One of the most stressful things I’ve ever done was take travelers checks to Japan. Because you sign each one at the bank at home, and then at the exchange you sign them again… and then you watch in horror as someone looks at each sig pair to see if any deviate too much!

And now I’m thinking about a cheese thread on the style of dieworkwear. “I spoke to your cheesemonger and they said…”

As artists, maybe won’t change your life, but the anime Perfect Blue touches on fame and relationship with managers.

I also found this, which I’m much more excited about: the comic version of Antiquities War, from 1995. There’s an ad for the movie Hackers inside.

I really loved this framing, and imagined having that conversation with family. And realized they’d claim “unborn children” and end the thought process. It makes me feel so sad and lonely. I really appreciate your words, your convictions, and for being out there for others.

I’ll have to try that! That’s a good savory combo..

Possibly even the best kind of horror, existential / inexorable. In some ways like Algernon Blackwood or HP Lovecraft, without the racism and appropriation.

I think it also reflects how many cards have been printed that I just accept there’s a card I don’t know of “Balos” vs suspecting it was mis-read.

A lot of those assholes assume firefighting is a solo activity, and if you had the time I’d love your take on team dynamics you’ve seen. I can also go look for other folks’ takes, it just occurred to me.

I agree with you, better to remove tedium than remove the thing that makes life with it. At the same time, I’d rather make the tools better, like “why do we need so much boilerplate code for API use?” And pursue that.

“Use up” seems an odd idea for a story, especially if we’re talking about omitting text.

I’d applied at a company funded by the Zuckerbergs and I spent most of my time trying to get an idea just how much control over day to day work they had. We didn’t reach clarity.
