One of the core beliefs I've adopted in the last few years is that we generally underrate how goofy and stupid the American past was and that being attentive to that helps us see continuities with the present. It's actually not obvious we live in dumber times. Every day tests this belief anew.

I recently got feedback on my game trailer from folks checking out Bundle of Joy for the first time during Next Fest and I'm considering redoing it. I acknowledge that it's fast-paced, but I wanted to try to simulate the stress in the game a bit. Wondering what y'all think: youtu.be/7nPlMKl8EAE

U.S. federal downsizing has meant also nearly decimating funding to human rights groups focusing on China. I found that’s opened up space for PRC reps to make overtures to these groups, offering money and access in exchange for… silence. www.npr.org/2025/02/19/n...

I for one would accept a return to the monocrisis

This one contract is roughly twice the annual budget of the National Endowment for the Arts.

When the entire field of astronomy uses bias frames and biases (aka images where no light falls on the detector, taken for calibration) We are so screwed

Fellow NSA - National Security Agency veterans. Look at what’s happened at the National Cryptologic Museum. They covered up with brown paper the photos of Women in American Cryptology. All in response to President Trump’s anti-diversity executive order.

Lutheran Social Services is one of the largest employers in South Dakota, operating senior living facilities across the state. Republicans are shutting it down Perhaps more concerning is Mike Flynn, known foreign asset, having access to this data?

Incredibly moving Justin Trudeau remarks: "We have fought and died alongside you....During your darkest hours...we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people....Canadians are a little perplexed as to why our closest friends and neighbors are choosing to target us."

it's hard to read the chart in the screenshot but what this moron is actually complaining about isn't "DEI" staff, it's special education teachers. these ghouls are coming for people with disabilities and they aren't even shy about it.

I think this is where the abbreviation VIP reaches its maximum grossness. According to US officials speaking to the newspaper, three American soldiers are dead tonight, but none of them were very important people. It’s a sickening thing to say when you think about it. www.wsj.com/livecoverage...

I'm still unpacking this delightful experience I had over the weekend at Super MAGFest, my crash immersion into the world of video game music jam sessions. www.ethanhein.com/wp/2025/insi...

Amen amen i say to you, anyone who possesses Burger in their heart and in their stomach is already an American

Dang. Sad to have missed most of these!

There wasn't enough Balatro at #MAGFest, but there was definitely still some amazing Balatro cosplay.

This person is dressed as an interactive tier list. Every person gets to draw a random company or move one placement on the board. I love MAGFest

I should've started watching Warrior earlier.

Wait, I thought there were only five Gundams

why are you making me watch a video

pushing the VHS tape into the super -fast rewinder (gotta go fast) ... pulling a floppy disk from my floppy disk box to load up a Civilization save file

hanging up a corded phone inserting or ejecting a floppy disk

My favorite part of Zuckerberg's Joe Rogan interview is when he suggests there is not enough masculine energy at his company, where two out of every three employees is a man.

My observation from the pandemic about this is a lot of people claim to like science but show they really don’t when it inconveniences them. What they actually like is random science trivia (“Saturn has 146 moons!”) that doesn’t challenge their world views. 🧪

This is Los Angeles. You step outside and breathe in the ashes of your friends' homes while charred pages from someone's beloved books glide to your feet on poison winds.

Sometimes when I talk to homeless people in the Bay Area, I ask them how they became homeless. Sometimes, they say that they lost their homes in a wildfire. More painful than seeing people lose their homes in a forest fire, is watching them lose their humanity, as our empathy for them evaporates.

If you’re wondering how Meta’s fact-checking program actually worked and what users lose with its closure, I wrote an explainer eons ago, around when that manipulated video of Nancy Pelosi was making the rounds www.cnn.com/2019/05/25/p...

This post from Musk makes sense because not only is he a racist, he also doesn't understand how fires start

All DC cats unable to comprehend their reality right now

This week is #AwesomeGamesDoneQuick, a dream for a compulsive video game #SpeedRun watcher like myself, and is basically a video game telethon for Prevent Cancer Foundation. (Neither org is on Bluesky 😞) Watch! Donate! m.twitch.tv/gamesdonequick

This is great.

One doctor’s recommendation to deny a 43-year-woman coverage “contained errors on practically every aspect” of her condition, the Labor Department said in 2012. United and other insurers continued to hire the doctor over the next decade. propub.li/3BQjJ1e

NEW: UnitedHealth strategically limits access to critical treatment for autistic kids. Leaked documents show that the insurance giant is culling providers of applied behavior analysis from its network and scrutinizing the medical necessity of therapy. Advocates say United’s strategy may be illegal.

its bid to host the world expo got the slogan "busan is ready" and when it failed I definitely spent a lot of time muttering "busan was not ready" to myself

the turkish economy is 37% based around not giving you ice cream

It's a sort of socialism that's nationalistic. A nationalist socialism, if you will.

Putting together the boardgames of the year list again for Smithsonian Magazine - if you are a gamer, especially a gamer parent, or involved in the industry would love to hear your thoughts.

this is amazing mileage out of a “feliz navidad” pun

Can you copy the vibe of a story about a case of a creator copying the vibe of someone else?

"One of my teachers at Columbia was Joseph Brodsky...and he said 'look,' he said, 'you Americans, you are so naïve. You think evil is going to come into your houses wearing big black boots. It doesn’t come like that. Look at the language. It begins in the language.'"
