it's hard to read the chart in the screenshot but what this moron is actually complaining about isn't "DEI" staff, it's special education teachers. these ghouls are coming for people with disabilities and they aren't even shy about it.

There are ~90,000 k-12 public school teachers in Virginia. Are they really going to disenfranchise an entire state’s special needs students just to increase the abled teacher population by 0.1%?
I’d also like to challenge the math here.
6.4 mil /125 teachers 51,200/teacher. That’s for salary, benefits, etc. the average home in Fairfax is $650,000, rent is 1800-2100/month. On the low end that’s 40% of their pretax income.
What credentialed, and degreed person would work there for so little?
It's Nazism. Blaming non-whites/gay/trans/disabled people for problems of their own white nationalist christo-fascist making, scapegoating/demonizing minorities, while simultaneously rounding up non-whites to deport, if they're lucky and, if not, put into a concentration camps? THIS IS NAZISM
They’ve been coming for disabled students since the moment they threatened the department of ed. Who do you think enforces the laws that all kids have a right to education?
Let me tell you, parents of gen ed kids are going to hate what it looks like when special ed teachers are cut, because all the special ed kids with behavior issues and high needs will be in gen ed classrooms taking most of their teachers attention and energy
Inclusion in education references and incorporates special education. Since MAGA=NAZI, of course they would want to end inclusion, reasonable accommodations, etc. Just like NAZIs did. I’m sure MAGA voters have family members that relied on public funded special ed, and they voted against themselves.
Not the main point but also fascinated by this guy’s belief that the fully loaded annual cost of a teacher is $51200 ($6.4M/“enough to hire 125 new teachers”) in one of the wealthiest counties in the country.
The current entry base salary ex benefits/overhead is $58k https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/fy25-teacher-195-day.pdf
"When you treat a disability as a joke, metaphor, or euphemism, you are causing harm in a couple of ways. First, you are spreading the idea that it’s acceptable to dehumanize and stigmatize someone with a disability."

(Moron is a term tied with the eugenics movement.)
"Moron is a term once used in psychology and psychiatry to denote mild intellectual disability. The term was closely tied with the American eugenics movement."
Read about Aktion T4 from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum:
Jesus wept, so the question there is why do you think some kids can barely read? Which kids, and why? And secondly, have you ever thought about taking part in mentoring scheme, you useless sack of garbage?
you'd think that market was already saturated but somehow it is not. of course, one could speculate on the dei forces at work in his particular case.....
Random f’n citizen here. I am also cool with spending tax dollars on improving the quality of education and why don’t we also feed these kids while we’re at it. Wouldn’t that make society better for all of us?
Fairfax resident (and Ffx Co. employee) here. We have a massive school system—one of the largest in the nation. Our county board is Dem controlled. The messaging has been reaffirming who we are and who we support (ALL of our citizens). Any efforts to undo progress here will be fought vigorously.
What we don’t need is meddlesome keyboard warriors criticizing something that is not broken or questioning something for which they don’t have all the information. And if you dont like it, don’t live here.
I worked in FCPS in the Department of Student Services. I sat in on hundreds of IEP and 504 meetings and was responsible for monitoring staff and system compliance with those agreements and let me tell you, if students are doing well it's because their families are able to commit outside resources.
Families who are forced to rely on the school system alone have to fight constantly just to get their kids what was promised, let alone getting their kids what they actually need. Go spend a day at Justice if you want to see how things are going for Fairfax's disadvantaged students. The scandal
Fairfax County Virginia has a population of 1.1 million. That's bigger than Kansas City (both halves) and Minneapolis combined. Not only is their school system is one of the largest in the country, but by numerous metrics, they are one of the wealthiest counties in the country.
Indeed. I worked in student services in FCPS and the story here isn't how much they're spending, it's how little. They could be doing a lot more for disadvantaged students (all love to the people on the ground, they're not the ones that make the budgets).
We have made DEI a synonym for minority instead of understanding it’s just making sure everyone has a seat at the table. People who need to carve out disability as a “different, special category” are showing their hand because they mean white people with disabilities.
Fairfax County Public Schools is ranked the sixth best school district in Virginia, so the whole argument is ridiculous on its face. Plus, 52 employees isn't a whole lot for a district with 180,000 students.
Don't let these effers get away with blaming dems for the state of our education when gop pushed common core nightmare and consistently vote to defund so they can privatize education. Plus all the gop culture war bs and the chaos that's caused in education.
And sadly…Trump’s conundrum of being eaten by a shark or electrocuted now makes sense because soon enough those will be the only remaining choice for non-believers.
Use alt text. What, are you on their side? Talking about "morons" and making information inacessible on purpose? You are not serious about protecting people with disabilities. Go "ghoul" yourself.
This is not how you call in well-intentioned folks who are on your side, this is how you alienate them. And if it’s truly the alt text you’re worried about, insulting the OP is a shit way to get them to comply in the future.
Hope your petty dunk made you feel warm and fuzzy though!
Frankly, as a white person who needs accommodations to work, I’m glad they are saying the ableism out loud. A huge number of Trump supporters are on disability or have children with IEP’s and just assume they are exempt because of whiteness.
Federal law (No Child Left Behind) requires funding for special education services be allocated before other costs, such as teachers. If funding is cut to education, teachers are the first to go. Increased class sizes, lower education scores, and calls for more charter school vouchers follow.
I think it’s important to know DEI includes protecting opportunities and access for the disabled. These are actually staff under the DEI umbrella. The assault on DEI has always included the goal of driving the disabled out of public life.
I know that Ruffini guy from a university usenet group from way back. FWIW, he's long been like this...willfully and/or provocatively ignorant, spewing the worst right-wing talking points.
Not just special education, but also ESL. I don't know if it's still true, but when my mom was an ESL curriculum specialist in Fairfax County they had more ESL students speaking the most different languages of any district in the country.
City of Falls Church (FCCPS) and Fairfax County (FCPS) are different school systems. FCCPS is very small and has 1 high school; FCPS is huge and has like 26 or something. Its pretty confusing, but both are excellent school systems. "Falls Church" can mean a part of Fairfax County or the city itself.
As a Falls Church City native and current Fairfax County resident (and parent of kids in the school system) I am unfortunately obliged to be pedantic about it 😀
They don't have to have any qualifications or experience and most of the jobs are massively oversubscribed. "Underpaid"? Their beloved market forces would not agree.
As is, it makes more sense to be Elon and buy influence. The pay is way low for responsibility and risk. As is, we're selecting for the craven and wannabe media personalities.
What do you think DEI means? The disabled community is taking hit after hit. It’s straight out of Hitler’s playbook. The disabled don’t contribute, they’re expensive, no one wants to look at them. So he loaded them on busses and stopped up the exhaust.
It was the precursor to the gas chamber. Shooting thousands of people a day was too hard on soldiers, the buses too small and cramped. It didn’t start with the ovens, but all of the small choices led right to their doors.
RFK and President Musk want to build "camps" for kids with disabilities so they can "study" and "treat" them with vitamins, concoctions, and exercise. They will make billions off it.
Ahh yes. The best use of resources is to eliminate services for children and pay Teachers $52k a year including their health insurance and hr costs so that their takehome is less than fast food workers.
Fascists always come for the disabled. Gay people, disabled people, ethnic minorities, people who have refused to assimilate, etc. Fascism requires conformity.
I grew up in Fairfax County, went to FCPS, and received a fantastic education. I had a stutter as a kid and FCPS SpEd helped me overcome it. I knew many people with IEPs in school who went on to achieve great things because of the support from FCPS. I will fight people over this if I have to.
Not to even mention that the salary for the teachers he wants to replace these teachers with would be $51200 per year in a county with the average home price of $750000.
Why would they be? There's no real consequence to going after the disabled. Mask bans were already being pushed by both parties and no one outside the disability community cares that it's endangering millions of people's lives. The mentally ill get blamed every time there's a shooting.
Maybe you (and others who post) can think critically about using words like "moron/idiot" when discussing the rank ableism of Trump and his sympathizers. Language is more important in our response than ever. You can't fight ableism with ableism.
I’ve known this for quite some time! They believe that we are a drain on the economy! They believe that we are useless! They don’t believe that we deserve disability even if we paid into it at one time! They want the money for themselves and would rather us die! They don’t see us as human beings…😔
We are one of the biggest school districts in the country and very successful. Children in FCPS are not the ones who can’t read. Go focus on your red counties if you want to find lack of education. They need to leave our schools alone in NOVA.
Nazis believe those with disabilities, as well as old people, and those they Hate like Blacks and Jews, should be killed.
Trump told his own nephew that he should let his son die because of his infirmity. And even tried to cut off that son's healthcare as blackmail at one point. Trump is a Nazi.
You know what would be great? A targeted media campaign to parents with children who need special education and let them all know what’s happening. No one is leading the charge to showcase all these policies and the impact on their individual lives. It’s time to invest in marketing.
The Nazis specifically went after any disabled people and shoved them into gas furnaces. This is absolutely the same motivation. Do away with the disabled or any people who may require more state assistance to enrich themselves. Know the enemy and don't imagine they aren't as bad as they appear.
Families with special needs children who voted for Trump (I know a few!!) in for a huge shock when local school districts that depend on federal funding have to shutter programs
Oh, everyone's going to suffer in this. The parents will suffer, even those that can afford help; the kids will suffer; communities will suffer. It's coming for everyone
IDEA is famously one of the biggest unfunded mandates that the federal government puts on localities. State and local govs are already paying almost all SpEd costs themselves.
This study suggests that the feds are paying, on average, only ~10% of the total cost to comply.
They are in for a shock, and it’s awful, and I don’t know how else people will learn the lesson unless it hits them directly. I hate saying that, but these folks believed the same lies that a lot of Trump voters believed, but are quickly being disabused of. There will be no good outcomes for awhile
I don’t want people to feel pain (tho they will) but I do find some comfort in the hope that the ensuing backlash (because that is also coming) will make the back half of the Trump-Vance admin much less destructive overall
You see, I DO want them to feel pain. I want this to hurt so fucking bad. I want it to be unbearable for the adults who voted for this. It’s the ONLY WAY THEY LEARN.
Yes. He hit a big fucking walk with that in 2020, and he will again. The backlash has already started, and it’s now just a question of how far the pendulum swings
The autism parent community in Greensboro is definitely weighted towards the WASP upper middle class conservative mom side. You know the type really quickly
I was at an IEP meeting just last week with a parent wearing a “Take America Back” hoodie. Ma’am, do you have any idea what this president would have us do with your child and with the detailed, labor-intensive plans we are making for him right now?
That's kinda the point here.. Make schools public schools look incompetent, unable to meet the needs of the children, then offer parents the "voucher" option. They can use it to help finance their kids attendance at a for-profit private schools. Maybe they'll offer "school-choice" loans as well..
For reference, there are over 13,000 teachers in Fairfax county so 125 teachers would be less than 1%, likely on the order of less than one extra teacher per school. If you think that is going to move the needle, ha. As for the budget, $6.4M is less than 0.2% of the budget. Boy who cried wolf much?
I know facts don't matter and that literacy rates can always be improved upon, but please don't start parroting that kids can't read. Literacy rates are and have been increasing continually for decades.
They have been doing this for years through their voucher and charter school programs. They redirect money away from children with disabilities. Charter schools aren't required to accept children with disabilities. If they do away with public schools, they do away with ed for kids with disabilities.
Most of their issues with others stem from the fact that they don’t understand things….so instead of asking to learn they just rather talk loud and make everything a conspiracy. I’m sick of them smh
Yeah, I can see how the administration that wants to eliminate sign language interpreters from its communications opportunities would be onboard with screwing over disabled students.
There are ~27,000 special education students in FCPS (15% of 180,000 total). So that's 1 staff member for every 500 students (27K/52). That's an expenditure of less than $300 per student ($6.4M/27K).
“Babies thrown out with the bathwater” Who is this person? People are dying all over the world already because they want all the money and basically want to blame refugees and diversity so that the masses attack black women and multilingual people while they steal it all. It’s a tech nazi coups
one thing i'm struck by whenever this guy posts is his basic incuriosity. he's so deep in the sauce of his cultural grievance that he can't even be bothered to figure out what the chart is actually saying and what the context is
right, if i see a right-wing apparatchik posting about bloat in the public sector i'm immediately going to ask myself if this guy is full of shit. but TAH has basically no discernment and also spends all day marinating in an online swamp
its hard to tell whether people who stayed on twitter are having their brains poisoned or if their willingness to stay on vichy twitter is the canary in the coal mine for them just being shitheads overall
Somewhat but seems have to gone down the spiral many other 'they were mean to Mitt Romney' republicans did where negative polarization against socioeconomic peers (fellow college educated libs looking down at you for working for increasingly insane Rs) has driven these people (Ruffini eg) insane
I got him to respond a few times to stupid things he’d said and the one guess I have is that he has some online habit, beyond Twitter, that surrounds with right wing / alt-right garbage and he’s internalized a big chunk of it.
Perhaps not the main point, but is this guy not a full-time faculty member at at university? Doesn’t he have actual work to do? I work in higher ed, too, and, like, I don’t have time to be shitposting culture war hogshit all day!
I remember going to a DC digital happy hour and seeing that guy there and noping out because how do you even socialize with a sociopath and the harem of weirdos he's convinced that he's just another guy
1. Fairfax Public Schools budget FY26 4 billion, so this is 0.0016 of budget
2. This is staged comment: Ruffini is a Republican strategist (I.e. disinformation hit man) RedState contrib former eCampaign director RNC. Has beef with kids taking ADHD meds

I'd have a lot more respect for Harper (and pundits of his ilk) if he just straightforwardly said, "Yeah, I like Trump and I voted for him," instead of doing the disingenuous "Donald Trump, who I *do not support*" bullshit.
so tedious that we have to keep watching that guy publicly shadowbox with his colleagues about whatever grievances he picks up from faculty cocktail parties
The charitable interpretation is that he is stupid. But in reality, they are positioned to speak without the truth. Lying won't negatively affect them, and if they're just casually wrong, it doesn't matter. Most Americans just don't care or greedily eat it up.
In one comment Trump specifically claimed air traffic controllers with disabilities were hired and seemed to blame them. Trump sounds more NAZI every day!
They're coming after anyone with a disability. It started w Chris Rufo attacking ASL interpreters and Deaf people during the emergency broadcasts for the LA fires.
It won’t just be immigrants at Quantanamo: “The Nazis wanted to ‘improve’ the genetic make-up of the population and so persecuted people they deemed to be disabled, either mentally or physically, as well as gay people. Political opponents, trade unionists and social democrats…”
There must be more than 52 special education teachers in Fairfax County. My school (not in FCPS, tbc) has over a dozen and we have like a thousand students.
Looking at the org chart it doesn't look like special education even falls under this. But a lot of it is Title IX compliance and administrative hearings, which...I'm not going to say this is a well-oiled machine, but it's a gigantic school district and a lot of this stuff is mandatory.
Also our kids who can't read fall overwhelmingly into two categories: poor kids with overworked parents, and ghouls who think education is liberal brainwashing that they actively deprive them of.
The same people SCREAM about test scores. Well, my dudes, these are the teachers who are directly involved in bringing those kids who are not at grade level back up.
Some notes - this county has almost 200,000 preK-12th grade students. It's one of the best school districts in the country, as well as being fairly well off - median income almost double that of the US as a whole.
So the jackass in the image is entirely wrong - Fairfax is maxing out at the superintendent making something under $3 per student in their care, for one of the best educational systems in the country. I know some guys who grew up here and some who raise families there now - no one "can barely read."
Some of this is propped up by Thomas Jefferson being one of the top high schools in the country - I grew up several states away and we knew about them in HS. But while there is also certainly bloat out there under a DEI label, this is just a good school district paying well and getting good results.
Comparing brand new teachers, what that $50k FCPS minimum starting pay represents, to professional administrators is pernicious framing. It’s staggeringly insulting to FCPS staff, & to readers’ intelligence. Par for the course with these “anti-woke” screeds.
Preemptively muting this thread, I am not an educator or expert here, I did a little bit of digging after already being broadly familiar with the district by reputation. I'm sure you can find someone who teaches there or has more specific knowledge than I do if you want to get into the weeds.
Yeah, I don’t think an untenured prof who hadn’t even published a book yet would get a gig like this without the all important qualification of Telling Atlantic Readers What They Want To Hear
I said this a number of days ago in a different post, too lazy to go find it, but as a parent who’s had kids in public schools since 2011, I feel confident that the anecdotal evidence I’ve seen is convincing that no one voted for cuts to resources for kids with special needs. Bald-faced bullshit
Tyler Austin Harper is an elite liberal academic trying to portray himself as somehow more masculine than other elite Dem academics, and he defines masculinity as being culturally right wing.
It's a psychological weakness disguised as an ideology.
I used to work as a teacher's assistant in special ed classes and in summer programs for teens with mental disabilities. Tyler is a fool who needs to fix his heart or die.
Kids can barely read because capitalists viewed phonics based reading instruction as a threat to their method because phonics works and theirs doesn't. It won't be fixed by more white people
Ever since Trump mocked the disabled reporter I knew this day was coming if he remained president. Americans would do well to push back: disability is a category that ANYONE can join at any time.
They want to privatize and expel special needs kids from the equation. This will harm so many families, that like the rest of us, want their kids to thrive and have the means to earn a living to support them. #RESIST
The answer is simple: the Trumplican fascists think disabled people shouldn't have rights. It's basically Mein Kampf, modernized. That's all they are, really.
I think they'll find that firing 51 staff (i.e. teachers) will be exactly enough money to hire 51 teachers.
6.4M includes salaries, benefits, office space, fixed costs, etc etc! You can't just divide by "average take home pay"!!!
First of all, Tyler, Fairfax county kids have top reading scores. They have an excellent education. We here in Fairfax are proud of our community. You don’t have a clue who we are.
Parents here are well-educated professionals, the woke people you love to hate. We don’t buy into your BS.
Start messing with us and find out. We are the educated professionals who work in the federal government, and for the local private sector. We run the World Wide Web. We run the US Military.
Our county is strong because of our education and diversity.
Same. Then over time realized that the occasional insight was offset by far more bullshit contrarianism, and the occasional incisive take is not so valuable that it's worth putting up with everything else.
Really the first sign of that for me was when he was going on about how polyamory shows a lack of commitment. Polyamory often requires MORE commitment to more people. That’s why I’m monogamous!
He was right that institutions used to hide behind diversity initiatives to avoid talking about class. He was also right that treating media representation of minorities in such a binary right/wrong fashion as many people often do now is simplistic…
they say "DEI" in public but the actual executive orders say "DEIA" including funding for accessibility for disabled people, which they are not so prone to demagogue about publicly
strong opposition to DEI itself is very low among the general public, not even brushing up against Trump's plurality electoral base, if they were also openly rhetorically anti-disabled we're talking about policies with 5-10% support that theyre unilaterally pushing across government
which, I should add, makes it all the more galling when any liberals or "moderates" are unwilling to oppose them in the harshest of terms. there is no political mandate of any kind for this.
Yeah, no way in hell. One of the few places in the country you can reasonably expect to get to a point in a teaching career where you're earning six figures.
I hate that the commenter admits that it’s an overcorrection and is fine with “babies being thrown out with the bath water.” My autistic son is one of those babies.
Exactly as the original Nazis did in 1930s Germany.
MAGAs are copying the playbook step by step without trying to appear unique or original in any way.
Also, his math comes out to 52k/yr per teacher total cost. A teacher taking home something like 25k/yr in Fairfax county would be living in the streets.
Aside from the malicious misreading, do teachers in Fairfax cost $50k to the district counting salary, health insurance, pension, ...? And what about in a few years when they get raises?
Hmmm, makes more than the president and vice president. Has the fact that housing, food, utilities, cell services, transportation(domestic & international) security, etc., etc. are completely gifted & non taxable for the prez & veep?
These folks pearl-clutching over the equivalent of budgetary rounding errors because the money goes to helping people in need are absolute scum of the earth. Being able to post things like this without shame is some sort of conservative anti-superpower.
also, the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives states and local governments, not the federal government, authority over public education. So Trump was just trolling with his EO to begin with
I'm sure you're correct in many cases. But I also know a lot of Trump supporters are just ignorant people who read a word and don't actually know what it means but equate it to being bad because (insert conservative mouthpiece here) said so.
That's why they added the A to "DEIA" (an acronym that didn't really exist, like, a month ago with the a there). They think they can quietly lump accessibility and all special needs under "woke" and get rid of those whiny iep parents, ramps, etc etc.
