This is crucial: if the phrase "peer reviewed paper" has weight to you, it's *because* you also know quite a few related, prerequisite concepts in your knowledge foundation. Without those, for many people, it's just meaningless gibberish that feels made up. Many, many Americans are like the old me.

They were, of course, correct. But I cannot emphasize enough my response: I had no meaningful context for what that meant, or why it was important. I only knew the words "peer", and "review" and "paper", individually. I dismissed the phrase at the time as something irrelevant and moved on. 2/2
