It's pretty insane how LLMs figured out how to do math: they built a "generalized helix" representing numbers they perform trigonometry on in order to do simple math. No human invented this, this is an emergent property from training on examples of arithmetic in their data set

LLMs are bad at quantitative tasks like this when you ask them directly, but very good if you, say, ask it to write a python script that does the task. I think this is actually optimistic since having them recognize this and tie directly into an agentic workflow is likely doable
