I'm currently compiling a record of this archive relating to Captain Cyril Bassingthwaite who served with the 9th Battalion Norfolk Regiment & who I wrote about in my book about the Norfolks on the Western Front it's such a fascinating insight into a man who was awarded the MC & Bar #WW1 #Norfolk

I'm now back from my first battlefield tour of 2025 & it's been an excellent tour especially because of the support & enthusiasm from the staff & students of Hazel Grove High School. This tour was arranged by Adaptable Travel #WW1 #FWW #History

It was a beautifully cold, clear night last night where you could see Venus over the Cloth Hall in Ypres #WW1 #FWW #Ypres #Venus

My school group attended the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate tonight & two of the students laid a wreath on behalf of their school. All the students have been a credit to their school throughout this battlefield tour arranged by Adaptable Travel #WW1 #FWW #Ypres #history

It's been bitterly cold on the Somme today looking at Y Ravine Cemetery at the Newfoundland Memorial Park. It shows you casualties from both the 1st July 1916 & the 13th November 1916 which is something I cover with my groups when we visit this site. #WW1 #FWE #Somme #Newfoundland

I saw this in Talbot House today & thought you'd find this of interest @caitlindeangelis.bsky.social

The Menin Gate now & then in WW2 when the area was fought over in 1940 #WW2 #Ypres

It's interesting that today I've had to block someone on this platform. I love BlueSky but sadly there still seems to be some who think this is X & I won't tolerate that. Anyway, here's a cat picture ...

One of the many things I talk about at Tyne Cot Cemetery are the Hatt brothers who both died within days of each other. Hazel Grove School were also given time to reflect at this special place on a battlefield tour arranged by Adaptable Travel #WW1 #FWW #Canada

Our next stop was Talbot House. This is an amazing place to visit & very different to what else you might see around Ypres. It's a beautiful house & they also serve tea & coffee & you can play the piano if you want. This is a tour arranged by Adaptable Travel #WW1 #FWW #Ypres

First stop today is Essex Farm Cemetery where we cover a number of subjects. But I will always make a point of visiting these Norfolk Regiment lads, the black & white picture is Alfred Knights. This a tour arranged by Adaptable Travel #WW1 #Norfolk

It's been a very cold day in Wipers & very busy so I only had time to take a photo of the trenches in Sanctuary Wood. But today has been about setting the scene for the students & tomorrow we'll be looking at various sites on a tour arranged by Adaptable Travel #WW1 #FWW #Ypres #Wipers #history

And we're off on my first battlefield tour of 2025 with Hazel Grove High School. We'll be looking at a number of aspects connected to the Ypres Salient today and will also be staying in that famous town. This is on a tour arranged by Adaptable Travel #WW1 #FWW #history #Ypres #Wipers

I've had a very productive day where I have been given the opportunity to look at the personal papers and photographs of Cyril Bassingthwaite who served in the 9th Battalion Norfolk Regiment & I'm now prepping for my first battlefield tour of 2025 which starts tomorrow #WW1 #FWW #Norfolk

So, for me, the guiding season is nearly here. My first tour goes out in a couple of weeks as I take a school I've worked with before across to the Somme & Ypres for a tour company called Adaptable Travel who are not on here yet #WW1 #FWW #history

Never forget ...

This is great news & I'm so proud & lucky to work with such an excellent tour company & more importantly such an excellent team of people #WW1 #WW2 #history

Remembering the first Zeppelin raids over England. On 19 January 1915 two Zeppelins targeted Great Yarmouth & King's Lynn in Norfolk causing the first civilian fatalities through an air raid over Britain. For more information on them please see my blogs, Part 1 is in the comments #WW1 #Norfolk

Giles certainly had foresight when it came to battlefield guiding 😂
