RIP Roberta. fontsinuse.com/uses/8873/ro... #Typography #AlbumArt #RobertaFlack

A reminder: 1. Elon Musk's wealth is mostly in Tesla stock 2. Tesla is successful because at a key moment in 2009 the federal government gave it a $465 million loan so it could make sedans 3. Musk is now firing thousands of government workers and slashing every service ordinary people depend on

remember that controversial AI project Pentagram did for the federal gov performance.gov from a couple of months ago? looks like almost all of that work is already gone, the site mostly serving as an archive of itself

@laurenshof.online on #fediverse and #Bluesky cultural differences: “It shows two social networks with very different cultures: one as a place to discuss mainstream cultural events, and one as a place for counterculture and the subversion of mainstream culture.” fediversereport.com/last-week-in...

Every newish Tesla I see says one of two things to me about its owner: Either they don’t mind making one of the world’s worst people richer, nor being associated with that person; or they truly don’t pay attention. I feel guilty being so judgmental, but I don’t know what else it can tell me.

In a #Rockridge neighborhood meeting. Councilman Zac Unger is talking about #Oakland budget deficit. Bright spot: the Coliseum Arena is generating more revenue for the city now than when it hosted the Warriors! Why? Cuz NBA teams keep arenas closed the day before and after games for practice, etc.

Just imported @letterformarchive.org’s Google Analytics account into @plausible.io. Browsing the exact same data in both platforms is like moving from a clunky old Dell running Windows NT to … well, you know … a modern computer. Things just work the way a website should work.

It may seem trivial to stop using product, a browser, a platform for ethical reasons. How could a single defection make any difference to these behemoths? But think about every conversation where these products are discussed as a norm. Each one is another opportunity to confirm your values.

#Bookstores and #BookDealers are essential to curators. Not just for finding specific items, but for recommending others. Can’t tell you how many times I found what I was seeking at a shop, but then introduced to stuff I should have been seeking. Curation enables curation (however you define it).

I shudder when I think about how many of my important research conversations of the last few years are locked into social media DMs instead of indexable email. I’ve recently made a point of gently directing folks to email if anything gets beyond basic chitchat.

The tech world has convinced every segment, including nonprofits, that “scaling” is the inevitable goal. Maybe perpetual growth doesn’t actually meet your mission. Maybe providing a few deep interactions is more impactful than many shallow ones. Plant stronger, individual seeds and they will spread.

Joe Gebbia, RISD grad & cofounder of Airbnb, joins the tech weaklings who bow and kiss Trump’s ring. Worse than donating money to the inauguration, he posted on X about how he voted for him. He took a look at the options and chose *this Republican party*.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde: "The vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors...may I ask you to have mercy Mr. President on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away."

"Masculine Energy"

not a surprise really, but still. the shift in corporate design/tech started looong ago, but I guess it’s all out in the open now

The TikTok ban, the Musk Twitter takeover, the Facebook moderation policy changes, the Republicans’ rapidly intensifying crackdowns on speech... let these be the proof you needed to move anything you care about online to a space you control. Digital sovereignty is more important than ever.

We don’t talk about beauty enough in urbanism when advocating for housing, amenities & safe streets. I think a lot of folks think beauty is frivolous. Having grown up in public housing, I know beautiful urban design makes people feel valued. I love this example of safe & beautiful street design.

Flickr’s Year in Review flickr.com/year-in-revi... is a delightfully kooky reminder of what makes it a platform outside social media norms. Good to see them acknowledge non-phone image sources, like scanners.

this is what long-time Elon watchers call "The Realization": when Elon stumbles into your area of expertise, and you realize everyone just gives the guy the benefit of the doubt because he talks about complicated things people don't pay attention to

I can sincerely say I’ve enjoyed moving most of my banking away from evil companies like Chase and PayPal. Wise has been my main int’l bank for years now, and it’s actually a pleasure to use. Thus, I have no compunction inviting you to come along with this affiliate link: wise.com/invite/dic/s...

This thread explains why I am still hopeful for the Fediverse, even while I appreciate Bluesky’s popularity. There is news that a bunch of celebs want to build a multiplatform system using Bluesky’s protocol, but the Fediverse (Mastodon/Pixelfed/etc) already exists. wetdry.world/@eblu/113824...

On Thursdays I work on my book with my editor at the #Rockridge Library. Those afternoons they happen to have “Read to a Dog” time, in which someone brings in a patient dog who sits and listens as the kids narrate their favorite book. Among the many reasons #libraries are the best.

My favorite part of Zuckerberg's Joe Rogan interview is when he suggests there is not enough masculine energy at his company, where two out of every three employees is a man.
