this is what long-time Elon watchers call "The Realization": when Elon stumbles into your area of expertise, and you realize everyone just gives the guy the benefit of the doubt because he talks about complicated things people don't pay attention to

I’ve been thinking about how monumentally stupid the Elon video game cheating thing is and I think it comes back to this post
there aren’t a ton of people who work in cars, or rockets, or even software
but everyone - everyone! - understands cheating at video games
totally unnecessary self-own

Granted, completely uninspiring but dynamically far better than the early attempts to make a “fast” car. The M3 performance actually turns and stops as well as going in a straight line.
Only took 20 years.
B) they still know their shit, to a degree that the genpop doesn't
But when they talk about "this car doesn't work" I tend to listen, no matter the politics involved
Car guys would've loved what Elon was promising, so when they turned on him...
Never mind
Like, imagine thinking you want your employees to call you uncle. Now imagine saying that out loud to a subordinate or sending a memo.
I keep looping back round to pity. The guy just seems so desperate for a friend.

Anyone paying attention should have turned on him then.
I mean, Lamborghini and Maserati and Lotus buyers had been putting up with garbage build quality and comically chintzy switchgear for decades.

Once I started paying attention…yikes.

We could have had /both/ gone in one dammit
It's wild how he managed to bullshit his way to being one of the most respected people when everything out of his mouth has been horse dooks the entire time.
Funny this has not emerged. Related to how batteries are - famously - the most expensive components in EVs perhaps?
NIO seems to make it work, but they build it into the lease and I gather their financials are a tad murky.
TSLA *might* have been able to swing it for the very small slice of their market willing to pay the staggering cost.
IMO it will be used for delivery/taxi/etc fleets, but not much else
Otherwise, designing vehicles for it from the ground up with highly standardized packs is a must. Logistics/ops are markedly worse than liquid fuels. And there's no avoiding the big capital expense.
The *exact* same energy as when trump stood in the middle of experts and recommended drinking bleach or shining UV light into the body.
They remain obtuse in specialized areas of expertise to sound smart, they ALWAYS stay shallow.
By about 2013, when he was losing other people's money in several glamorous industries, the lights were flashing.
We only realize the level of batshit, when he blunders into a topic we personally have some expertise in - but many probably assume it’s just a quirk and that he actually knows what he’s talking about on other topics.
He didn't care, and couldn't listen. He wanted it to have bulletproof windows so believed it did, and then freaked out when the facts contradicted him.
He's not learning the game either way; if he's not learning it because he's given himself the equivalent of mild brain damage, that's a bigger deal.
I agree that fried brain does match well with Elon, but that's more evidence that Elon didn't level that character. You can get killed doing everything right in the game. And he supposedly managed hundreds of hours? No.
I agree he doesn't know the game, the brain damage is why _even if he *were* playing it_, he's not learning it/not performing the correct actions.
Thanks!
September 2005 issue I believe. It is behind a paywall. I read it in print.
And unfortunately spaceflight is a realm where impossibly optimistic deadlines are the norm, so SpaceX falling behind is only bad without the context of their competitors.
5 years ago people tried to tell me he was the most important man in the 21st century and would solve climate change every time I retweeted something anti-Musk
doesn't matter though, he bought the president.
Top scientists tend to be pretty smart and unlikely to share an ideology with musk.
Ya know like Edison or any other rich "inventor"

...he called Kagerou Imaizumi a cat. That's when I knew he was an idiot.
2025 is confusing...
But also yes, a hilarious self-own.

There’s a non-zero chance that someone’s gonna roll a series of natural 20s if you run a million trials.
The exponential nature of wealth means that lucky guy is going to get outsize influence.
Trying to recreate the internet boom without a similarly game-changing set of hardware and software architectures doesn’t work.
It’s the ones who want us to keep clapping for them while they go into midlife crisis that pose a danger.
Think that form of lying gets judged much more harshly than lying for power or money
His undoing had to come from apolitical hobbyists whose attacks were based in niche knowledge.
it’s honestly a super power
Most human beings do not lead an evidence-based life.
Often, the lightbulb moment happens when he talks his usual crap but regarding something about which we possess actual knowledge. Then the reaction often changes to “Hang on! He’s full of crap!”
People who don't know anything about the technology or tactics or history he (ab)uses in his story think "This is cool, this must be how it works." Experts in those fields know better
Star Trek: continuing to provide useful guidance in the real world
I always hear it with a slather and that pantomime villain clawed hands touching gesture.
Also the dad on Friday Night Dinner.

It’s always Men, and

The cave rescue incident, tho, that was when he showed a really malicious side.
Just like male Elizabeth Holmes

In most companies 84% of revenue is much more than 80% of payroll, and Twitter was burning cash to start.
How about: “I’m gonna use my money to set up a fund for struggling and aspiring authors.” Sweet?
I don't know anything about electric cars, so I don't have an opinion
I don't know anything about rockets, so I don't have an opinion
I know about software, and he's shit, which makes me suspect his cars and rockets (& everything else he burbles about) are shit, too
I'm always sceptical when one person is put on a pedestal by so vast numbers of people!
Only because I refused to believe that one man was doing all of that stuff. When he was doing that flamethrower stuff I thought he was trying to larp as iron man.
The submarine meltdown didn’t help either lol.
My realization was when he tried to intervene in the Thai cave rescue. And then when one of the world's top cave rescue divers told him he was full of shit (something every cave diver instantly knew) he got butt hut and accused him of being a pedophile.
At first, it was a "wow, someone is funding the rescue," then became a "oh. He's stupid. With a fragile ego." Happened within the same minute.
That tiny experience told me he was full of shit and had never been in a cave that hadn't had a broad walkway created for tourists.
But more so when he was like ohhhh my engineers could develop a submersible to navigate through there and have it built in 3 days (or whatever).
And I was like good do it.
Then I was like ohhhhhh this guy is just full of shit and just says nonsense
What he proposed was so terribly ill suited and engineered, it's objective proof he relies on others for everything engineering.
He knows the power of publicity, and it's role in boosting valuations. He's good at working hard while driving smart people to their very limit. This trait was shared by Heinrich Himmler, Lavrenty Berija and Robert Moses.
I liked his cartoons about how your cat always sticks his butt in your face better.
I think he was talking about gimbaling engines randomly out of nowhere and I had the realization that he was just parroting stuff he'd heard from an engineer in a meeting just then and thought it made him look smart.
Literally the first thing you do with any engineering challenge is to study the problem.
He clearly hadn't, but still insisted he knew more than the experts and then insulted them when they called him out.

but only not funny
The dude is a complete fraud and pathological liar.
Two things everyone else figured out decades ago.

But also I mean going to Russia to try and buy ICBM’s with the guy who then became head of nasa probably didn’t hurt?
Like the system is feedback looping, etc

Mine is when he offered to get those trapped kids out of a cave, did not get those trapped kids out of a cave, then when someone DID get those trapped kids out of a cave he accused them of being a pedophile.
Pity Tesla couldn't keep him away that well or we'd have an affordable model and no electric dumpster mobiles
They literally had to quick train the kids in cave diving because the tunnels were so narrow and twisty, and Musk was all "use my giant goddamn submarine that won't fit!"
