Just to clarify: the communal bathroom wasn’t designed to be coed. It was a men’s room, on the men’s floor. But women used it rather than going up 3 flights to use their own. After the first week each year it was a complete non-issue.

At my alma mater, my dorm had men’s levels and women’s levels. The women would come down to the men’s floors to hang/party/etc. If a woman was on the men’s floor and needed to use the restroom, she just went in to community bathroom and everybody left her alone. Not rocket science.
