They played some good-ish hockey to get themselves into the playoffs, but man this team needs a rework this offseason. Hopefully Gritsyuk adds some much needed depth scoring next year. What a strange season. This is unlike any I’ve seen from the Devils.

Would be nice to get some reinforcements for the playoffs.

Let’s gooooo!!

That’s also this leafs teams’s core roster that has that record in elimination games. That’s also a fact. Another fact is that you’re absurdly biased for not noticing.

You’re not watching the Devils. You want to jam this dumb narrative down everyone’s throat as one of those typical fans who blame everything on their former coach. If the Leafs improve this year, it’s because they collectively grew a pair and came through in some big moments for once.

Palat gave whoever took that point shot all the time in the world.

Definitely went down easy.

They mostly looked decent. Some costly unforced mistakes, Nemec with a few. Nemec’s confidence looks super low. Need some better execution tomorrow.
comment in response to post
They’ve mostly played pretty well lately. Unfortunately they can’t hold a lead as well.
comment in response to post
2 of the games they were leading late in the 3rd.
comment in response to post
Playing their 3rd period hockey in the 2nd.

Markstrom needs to make some of those saves, but I don’t understand what is happening to the Devils in the 3rd period. This is new where they get absolute shelled in the 3rd defending 2 goal leads.
comment in response to post
Wow, that was ugly.
comment in response to post
That 5th goal was a wobbly wrist shot from the point. He’s gotta stop that.

Let’s go!!

This is a good assessment period for Fitz and an opportunity for about 2/3 of the team to prove they’re part of the solution, not the problem.

I’m not happy either with Fitz, but let it play out. It’d be a very good sign if he helps get this team on track and in the playoffs. Today/tomorrow is a big opportunity to solve some of the obvious bottom 6 issue the team has had this year.

I agree, they are playing better than they have in a while. Get a bunch of depth with the LTIR cap room and make this team into a monster when Jack hopefully comes back. But it’s a lot to ask. We’ll see if Fitz can make it happen.

I’m not positive this team will make the playoffs.

Embarrassing call, but the Devils needs to be better there.
comment in response to post
Fitz doesn’t either

You can’t blame Fitz for losing McLeod and Mercer sucking. I can see a point there. But Nico has played very well, so not sure why you listed him as a negative. The team’s depth is very slow now though. What you can blame him for is not identifying the too many Haula,Palát, and McDermids.

He looked just like that when he dislocated his other shoulder. I’d expect the worst here.

I just watched the replay. I’m pretty confident he’s going to miss some time. It looked very bad.
comment in response to post
Very very impressive.

I miss that guy

His roster is weak beyond the Hughes brothers, Hischier, Bratt, and an underperforming Meier. Beyond them, it consists mainly of aging veterans and struggling players who lack speed and skill.
comment in response to post
This isn’t directed at Casey or anything. More just frustrated at the state of this team. I’m starting to feel like Fitz has completely set this team back.
comment in response to post
In 2023, I never thought I’d be saying this 2 years later, but this teams future outlook is not looking good. They have some very good core players, but their roster falls off a cliff after that. Fitz turned a fast skilled team into a pretty damn slow team lacking skill.
comment in response to post
I don’t think it’s that simple. Fitz really put himself in a tough spot. Even if he did identify the “physical”over compensation, I don’t think it will be easy find that perfect fit right now. Even worse, I don’t think Fitz is identifying the overcompensation.
comment in response to post
Yeah, it’s crazy what Fitz and friends has done to this team. I’m not even sure he’s good at drafting. Maybe I’m being pessimistic, but I think there is a very good chance this team misses the playoffs. That game was very discouraging.
comment in response to post
It’s frustrating, he’s so much better than this. Or at least he was. He gets eaten up on the wall and coughs up the puck under any pressure now.
comment in response to post
They created some good chances, but seemed like they faded a bit in the later part of the period. I wish Mercer was playing better. He can’t make a play in the offensive zone.
comment in response to post
This didn’t feel like a “more of the same” type of game. This was the best they’ve looked against a top team in over a month. We’ll see if this was the exception or if they’re getting back on track over these next few games.
comment in response to post
This is the best they’ve looked in a while.
comment in response to post
I’d think a 1st rnd pick is a top priority.
comment in response to post
I wish Mercer could get back to his 2022-23 version of himself. It’d go a long way in improving the state of this team.
comment in response to post
100% agree. This is also no longer a fast team. Fitz found a way to obliterate their speed advantage the last 2 years.
comment in response to post
Fitz is getting a good look at the forward depth he put together. It has not fared well.
comment in response to post
Great game by Dawes. Team needs to play better in front of him, but the Devils just really don’t have the depth. I was hoping Fitz could play it patient with a trade, but it’s become urgent at this point.
comment in response to post
I loved Mercer, what the hell has happened to him?
comment in response to post
I don’t know what happened after Christmas, but this is a legitimately a bad team now. I think Fitz did a decent job over the summer, but he overcompensated thinking size was more of an issue than it was.

This team does not look like a confident bunch.
comment in response to post
Gonna need a big third. This team really needs some reinforcements. Their offensive depth is not good at all.
comment in response to post
Very rough period. Very sloppy. Not so good puck management.
comment in response to post
That extra pt felt like a must. It’s gonna be tough sledding if this team is without Hischier for a a decent stretch. Thought they played pretty good today though.
comment in response to post
If the Devils can put a stretch of decent hockey together, they’ll be fine. Markstrom was letting in a soft goal here and there while the Devils were playing well, but went into beast mode when they started struggling. I’m also optimistic Markstrom won’t be out too long, but you never know.
comment in response to post
Hopefully they can string some wins together here.
