I remember driving around Peach's castle in Mario Kart 64 and thinking it was so cool. Kids are gonna love World.

I like to think it's intentional, I can see it coming in handy for casual players who find the level too tough or stressful

Not really, the N64 Zelda games used the C buttons for items, Metroid Prime 1 and 2 used the stick for swapping beams, it was all over the place.

(Nah, just kidding, this is Wario, one of the playable characters exclusive to the DS version. It's unlocked by completing a secret level in the mirror room www.mariowiki.com/Chief_Chilly...)

I'm thinking of a situation like Super Soccer, which *was* released on the Super Famicom NSO, only to be removed a few years later. Virtual Console was better than NSO in this regard, because you could keep the games you bought regardless of right holders shenanigans.

Mega Man 2 is too popular to disappear, but what about more obscure games? What if the publisher itself shuts down?
Piracy is the obvious solution, but it shouldn't be, not when companies like Nintendo go all out against it (this is just from last tuesday: www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/03...)

Nah, Mario RPGs don't have long legs, sadly. Most of the sales are registered at launch.
TOK sold:
- 2.82M in its first quarter
- 3.12M in three quarters
- 3.47M life-to-date
TTYD sold:
- 1.76M in its first quarter
- 2.06M in three quarters
So we can most certainly say that TOK outperformed TTYD.

I swear Gardevoir is cool because of its high special attack and the psychic/fairy offensive typing

I have a soft spot for Cave Story's Moonsong, but all four would be wonderful.

The problem is, getting used to it takes a while.
Modern games have standardized character and camera controls, which younger players have come to expect, along with certain QoL features. It can be difficult to find the patience to fully immerse yourself in something older and clunkier.

As an avid Mario fan, I think SM64 is still the most fun game in the series, movement-wise.
It's ugly, and the level design is serviceable at best, but mastering Mario's moveset and momentum is so satisfying. Once you get used to it, every move flows into the next so nicely.

(I'm Italian 🇮🇹)
I made two Mario-related websites, mariowiki.it (member of NIWA) and mariocastle.it, because I wanted to provide resources for Italian Mario fans.
