Single shot 70mm from yesterday. Ghostly. Etherial. And a photo I'll probably never be able to top! Dickens, Nebraska. 6/16/25

Pretty good day over ranchland west of Wellfleet, Nebraska this evening June 16, 2025, think this tornado lasted an hour or so... #newx with Juston Drake

Career tornado intercept just now Dickens Nebraska!

This is so very resonant with the philosophy seeping more every day into faculty affairs, and students are dragged into this same financialized logic that doesnt let them slow down enough to think vigorously. manganiello.social/objects/1bf4...

This Sunday, we collected a close range dataset of multiple tornadoes near Arnett, OK in RaXPol. Despite scrambling to find a position, we captured the debris cloud, a debris ejection associated with intense RFD, and surface-layer vorticity worms in the inflow and RFD.

Well that was fun, got great data from Raxpol on two tornadoes near Arnett, OK

You may have seen this news shared today and wondered why it matters. I could write a long report on the many ways Unidata impacts students, educators, scientists, and institutions. For brevity, allow me to share one small specific example that, until now, I have taken for granted. NetCDF.

Unidata is responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting software such as: NetCDF4 MetPy LDM AWIPS2 Public version GEMPAK THREDDS They also support realtime data access via a public EDEX server, THREDDS, and more.

Here a quick time lapse of the first 20 or so minutes of the Matador,TX tornado the other day. I love how the tornado carouseled around the meso multiple times! youtu.be/O5S9Hqkkinw?...

Another great day of #LIFT observations of a carousel SVC/vertical vorticity rollup producing some wild tornado dynamics. April in West #TXwx!

The Rapid X-band Polarimetric Radar (RaXPol) from OU'S Advanced Radar Research Center (ARRC) beautifully captured the tornado near Matador, Texas last night 🌪️ At it's fastest rotation rate, RaXPol can complete a 360° spin in just 2 seconds and a full volume scan in as little as 20 seconds! #txwx

Quick edit of a tornado NW of Matador, Texas, today. I made a poor repositioning decision earlier and was in catch-up mode the west side of it trying to get back in the lead. But I honestly really like the lighting while the rear flank downdraft was gracious enough to leave it visible. #stormchasing

GLERL and CIGLR scientists study larval white fish in the Great Lakes to try and understand why this popular fish is in decline. Just some of the work the lab does to help regional commercial and recreational fishing communities! noaaglerl.blog/2025/04/24/s...

Multiple tornadoes, including mobile mesonet circuit west of Roaring Springs, out on #LIFT today. Great day for data collection on our first 2025 deployments with the TTU crew!

Timeline is flooded already, but I'll throw some of my pictures of tornadoes from the monster Matador supercell this evening. Even more importantly Raxpol captured some great tornado data!

An incredible view of a dust storm charging south across Mexico.

If there's any time to be highlighting the research made possible under NOAA and its partnerships, it's right now. And that work is no joke. inside.nssl.noaa.gov/nsslnews/202...

I wonder what the maximum supercell composite from an observed sounding is, this has to be up there. Is there anyway to query something like this @akrherz.bsky.social

Last night a tornado hit a trailer park just miles from where I used to live. In Talladega, a bus was thrown into the roof of a high school. Several schools in the path would have been out on the roads at Prom if not for the warnings of the National weather service last night. Thank NWS.

Cuts at NOAA compromise the nation’s ability to monitor fish stocks, leading to greater risk of overfishing and economic losses for the $321B industry that sustained 2.3M jobs in 2022. #SaveNOAA #NOAA #ScienceMatters #FederalLayoffs

If you haven't already signed up for this spring I can't reccomend armchair forecaster enough. Andrew put a ton of work into the game and imo it's one of the best severe forecasting contests around! armchairforecaster.com

Friendly reminder: if you are waiting on something from a US-based scientist/reviewer/editor, please realize that we're barely making it through each day putting out non-stop fires and trying not to collapse into tears. We're trying our best, but things will take longer right now. Give grace.

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13. I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.

:: Yes, this came from a comic book. It still has a powerful, moral lesson, & it should be shared, especially with everything that's happening in our world. Please take the time to read the whole thing.

Here is my Federal Employment Termination story:

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

Do you see that squall line coming your way, Southeast US? See that tornado watch box? Do you like having hi-res radar images and timely warnings for storms like these? Meteorologists - real live people - help keep you safe and informed. Keep NOAA/NWS funded and staffed. Tell your congresspeople.

While I wait for the email that tells me whether I’ve been fired or spared, here’s a thread of things I’ve had the privilege of working on, experiencing, and accomplishing in my 10 months as a federal employee at the Storm Prediction Center. 1/?

The NWS is one of (often polled as the # 1) the most popular agencies in the entire government. Also, it costs a few bucks per taxpayer to fund a year. The benefit people get out of it vs cost is insanely good. And gutting it is...extremely dangerous
