Agreed; Origins and II are pretty good at giving the sense that the characters are well-rounded people who exist outside of their interactions with the player. DA:V's companions feel like problems for Rook to solve, or at the very best, coworkers to Rook's HR manager.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Estinien learned to read (or improved his literacy substantially) comparatively late in life, with “enjoys tropey ‘low-mid brow’ pulp” as a big component of that.

Was just trying to unpack why my instinctive way to summarize my BG3 Tav is “post-HW Estinien energy” and this would be a trait they share in common.

As an extension of the “came from a shepherding family,” he’s got a surprising amount and depth of textile arts knowledge/training. Definitely knows how to maintain/repair the soft parts of his own kit. Maybe handspins or knits as an outlet for fidgety energy.

My take on FFXIV Shadowbringers might be somewhat less hardline “Everything sucks and I hate it here; I want to go home” if Ardbert didn’t specifically manifest to trauma dump on you when you’re in your room trying to rest.

I’m finally picking BG3 back up after dropping it mid act 2, because of a combo of annoying bugs and “you can’t advance because you’re taking the bare-ass minimum possible long rests, and those are the main place we’re staging plot/character interaction advancements.”

I need to go dig it up, but one of my first screenshots is the Cape Westwind guys like “This is the invincible Warrior of Light???!!” and facing Rhitatyn the eight foot walking panzer tank is my traffic-cone shaped minimum-height Black Mage. Like, yeah, guys, she’s as surprised about it as you are.

If you can't handle your discomfort at having to be around weird people, the solution is not to try to force queer people to stop being weird. The solution is to do the work within yourself to unpack why you're uncomfortable and leave those other people alone.

one of the most important being-online lessons I had to internalize was "you don't need to provide good customer service to weirdos on your own feed"
