As the thread suggests, I don't think it's a necessarily problematic for pupils to follow along as the teacher reads. The assumption that it is better for kids to only listen due to cognitive load issues isn't currently supported by the available evidence.

To the best of my awareness, the research really isn't developed enough to draw any firm conclusions on this question. Personally, I suspect that it would make little difference either way.

To be clear, every penny of royalties from my first book, The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading, (£40k+ so far) have gone to charity and that will continue to be the case.

Sorry, but I haven't decided what I'm doing with the royalties of this second book. My £900 Honda Jazz might be giving up the ghost as we speak, so I might keep the royalties for this second book. 😂
