Recently, we found out that our R01 funded through PAR-22-241 was withdrawn by NIAID as the NIH no longer prioritizes research programs related to DEI. This has been devastating news for our young research group, and we are now trying to scram together for a path forward 🧵1/12

The American Society for Microbiology is committed to ensuring that scientific research is conducted adhering to strict standards for biosafety and biosecurity, but pausing research is not the path forward. Read our statement: asm.org/press-releas...

🔥 BREAKING: Bristol Myers Squibb shareholders voted today to reject two anti-DEI proposals. One of the proposals called on BMS to "Cease DEI Efforts," and was rejected by shareholder vote 97-2 percent (1% abstained). BMS Board supports "our culture of inclusion" and "all decisions are merit-based."

Keeping an eye on the funding to the Women’s Health Initiative, as promised. (Context: bsky.app/profile/lizn...)

🚨 Cool new project alert 🚨 WE- you, me, everyone- need to work together to get important science messages out to people. 4 artists & 3 scientists collab'd on these posters. We hope YOU will put them out in your community. Each poster comes w/info about each topic. Get 'em Squidfacts.bigcartel.com

The best start to a week: Brian Goldspiel’s phenomenal thesis defense today. For the last 5 years, it’s been a true joy getting to know the brilliant, multi-talented person Brian is. His infectious passion has transformed the lab and he’ll be deeply missed. Could not be prouder🥲

I'm spending two intense workshop days with immunologists and other researchers this week, focused on science communication and public engagement. What questions would you like me to ask them? What do you wish they would talk about more?

As the U.S. government slashes support to research institutions and threatens universities like Harvard and Columbia with the freezing of federal funds, European leaders hope to benefit from what they are calling a U.S. "error" and a "gigantic miscalculation."

"Science is an investment. We will put forward a new 500 million package for 2025-2027 to support the best and the brightest researchers and scientists from Europe and around the world." — President @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu at the ‘Choose Europe for Science' event at La Sorbonne 🇫🇷

All right, scientists. 🧪 The Trump administration is trying to break scientific expertise in the civil service. This will affect #NIH program staff. Red 🚨. It's your job to submit comments by 5/23 saying that's a terrible idea! This group has info: www.friendsofbls.org/comment-temp...

Great 🧵 on the path to the discovery and lifesaving uses of adrenaline…

Which FDA-approved vaccines had randomized, placebo-controlled trials? ALL OF THEM. Polio? Measles, mumps, rubella? Haemophilus influenzae B? Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis? Meningococcus? Varicella? Pneumococcus? Rotavirus? RSV? Hepatitis B? Influenza? HPV? COVID-19? Shingles? YEP. A thread🧵 1/

Excited to be en route to Honolulu for the @aai.org Annual Meeting, #IMMUNOLOGY2025. I’ll be giving a talk tomorrow morning (Sunday) at 7 am in room 312. Come hear more about my postdoctoral research at the intersection of environmental nutrient sensing and regulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Brian Goldspiel in the Bailis lab defends his thesis tomorrow!

To all the smart finance experts in government, an FYI. 50% reduction in federal science funding would reduce the US GDP by 8%. The housing economy crash in 2008 dropped US GDP by 3.8%. It's the economy stupid.

Never stop telling your stories. Science is for everyone. #postdoc #standupforscience #neuroscience www.abqjournal.com/opinion/arti...

“America dominates the most essential part of pharmaceutical production -- research and trials…. Trump & the GOP are shutting down university labs conducting drug research. They are canceling cancer clinical trials. They are defunding the #NIH “ #science #MAHA www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

I’m not giving up on spreading science on social media, but Leah’s right here. I’ve spent the last 8 years thinking hard about how to reach people outside of our social circles & education bubbles. Quite literally meeting them where they are, on the street, in coffee shops, is where I’m focusing.

The IRACDA program was one of my favorites at NIGMS, good for the postdocs involved and for the institutions where they taught. Terminating it is just idiocy. Well said @ggnanadesikan.bsky.social

“It is exciting to see funding for multivalent inactivated influenza vaccines, but it will be important to continue funding other promising platforms as well, like mRNA vaccines that can simultaneously deliver dozens of influenza vaccine antigens.”

Many thanks to Lilly @radoshevichlab.bsky.social & Brian Russo @bcrusso.bsky.social for hosting me! Such a fantastic time meeting with colleagues & trainees at National Jewish & CU Anschutz & hearing about their exciting research! A wonderful reminder of how fortunate we are to be scientists.

#WeekendRead #NoTimeToDie! Matt, Better &co show @ Science Immunology that efferocytosis of apoptotic neutrophils (not epithelial cells) by alveolar macrophages reprograms their metabolism, boosting glutaminolysis & decreasing ROS, thus favoring repair but facilitating secondary bacterial infections

Read this first, then read this piece from an anonymous NIH employee at @donmoyn.bsky.social's Substack. Everything falling into place for Congress to go through rescission to make NIH cuts in a way that's both more politically palatable and more enduring. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-nih-bu...

The scientific community is at a pivotal moment right now. And we are seeing things start to shift. Now is the time for scientists and scientific institutions to step up. No one is coming to save us. 🧵

FYI: The Spencer Foundation, Kapor Foundation, The William T. Grant Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have collaborated to offer $25K rapid response grants. "This rapid response bridge funding opportunity is for scholars and teams whose grants have recently been cancelled by NSF."

Week 15 Meeting the Moment debrief is up. It’s a lot, and the only way we are getting through is together. buttondown.com/liminalcreat...

Science news is particularly grim this week. For NSF funding, 2 key fronts: 1) freeze on ALL existing grants (portal is down - no $$ going out, including reimbursements) www.nature.com/articles/d41... 2) budget proposes 40% overall cut & 15% cap on indirects (lawsuits blocked same for NIH in Feb)

Together with leading science organizations, ASM filed an amicus brief calling for immediate restoration of NIH grants supporting early-career scientists. Read the press release: asm.org/press-releas...

Bluetorial: Timing of getting grants out the door at NIH The pauses and low rate of releasing awards may be a problem in terms of getting the NIH appropriation spent by September 30, 2025

Four scientific societies, @ascbiology.bsky.social, @asbmb.bsky.social , @asm.org and @faseborg.bsky.social, all partners in the MOSAIC program, have filed an amicus brief today in support of this suit: www.ascb.org/society-news...

Budget released today: 40% cut to NIH 50% cut to NSF If enacted, this will destroy academic research in the United States. It will also have a major trickle down effect on the entire academic ecosystem

@protectdemocracy.org, alongside our partners at @cspinet.org, @aclum.bsky.social, and @aclu.org, are seeking to have NIH and HHS restore terminated research grants, resume processing stalled grant applications, and stop terminating future grants and grant programs based on forbidden topics.

Unlawful grant terminations are harming young scientists and threatening innovation. ASCB joins leaders calling for immediate funding restoration. www.ascb.org/society-news...

Go @ascbiology.bsky.social and partner societies! If your scientific society is not pushing back on illegal actions of the President. remind them that we need leadership and hiding and capitulation are NOT helping their members

Breaking News: President Trump renewed his threat to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status. The move would test legal limits on what he can tell the IRS to do.

We tested our H5 mRNA-LNP vaccine in calves (!!!), and I’m happy to report that the vaccine was highly immunogenic. Current studies are underway to evaluate the vaccine in lactating dairy cattle. Fantastic collaboration between Penn and the USDA, funded via the NIH. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Excited to see this out in @science.org today!! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

My quote of the day It takes years to realize the multiple benefits of science; without adequate, sustained funding for research, the careers of many bright, young scientists may come to a screeching halt. Carol Greider

How do intracellular #bacteria breach vacuoles to enter the host cytosol? @leaswistak.bsky.social @matthijnvos.bsky.social @enningalab.bsky.social &co show that #Shigella uses its T3SS system to damage endomembranes via mechanoporation to initiate cytosolic access @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4jXrr9Z

Great work by the @inflammasomelab.bsky.social @s-burgener.bsky.social and colleagues showing in vivo the importance of caspase-1 inactivation in controlling inflammation! Impressive amount of work behind it, glad to see this out! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
