I think what he's really into is coming up with weird characters and telling their stories in punchy episodes. He doesn't seem to care as much about weaving giant arcs... which is sort of what he did set out to do with the multiple timelines but It's manga. It's ongoing. No takebacks sadly

Whereas Mars Chronicle's real issue is very staggered releases due to him being involved in the Alita movie process and also being a mangaka in his 50s and health catching up with him. When you read it volume to volume, it's pretty damn good

The Omnibus editions include a whole bunch of "reader contests" for designing characters that would appear in the story, one of the last ends with every single winner entry just appearing for a single page where they murder each other I really do think Kishiro had absolutely had it by then

Sure is! That whole tournament arc in Last Order is so clearly editor mandated meddling that it no doubt hurt Kishiro more than any readers groaning about it going on forever. We could just skim through it, dude has to actually draw the thing for YEARS

Western TV and superhero creatives just go all out attacking everyone, whereas to find out about some mangaka's troubled times with an editor and publisher, you'd see some subpar plotline with all too many characters in a tournament arc, and then one of them is a giant penis monster

Symphogear is the BEST like, it's kinda goofy and sometimes bit iffy, but it has the highest highs of pretty much any anime, it is so HYPE and gets you going Symphogear OST got me through years of office work and ultimately encouraged me to reach for my dreams

This is why I don't touch American comics, it's complete mind-melting nonsense like this, re-releasing a re-make of a re-boot of a re-imagining of a re-telling of a re-ally fuckin sick of this shit guys And they wonder why manga dominates every bookstore

And then there's also the part where, if you draw stylized characters on any abstraction level past hyperreal portraits, of course they will look similar to someone else That's... kind of the point of the abstraction. It's there for the audience to fill in the blanks

Yeah there's not even a downside in taking the "hey this looks like X" as anything but a compliment - but most of the time, people really DO mean it as "hey I recognize this as a thing I really like" but has no visual library / ability to express to say it in any other way
