Just seeing the RCT 'scandal' brewing among econs again. This is not a question about some bad apples or some instances of malpractice. The RCT industry has been completely distorted from its inception in Econ and this is closely tied to the incentive structure of the discipline.

The tendency among sm Marxists &/or leftists to diss identity aspects of contemporary movements or to reduce it to identity determinism betrays a laziness in analysis to meaningfully integrate theoretical category of class w/ identity. Let’s be better & put in the work. It’s not one vs other.

Let's try this: I am looking for Marxist / HetEcon views on monopoly, preferably more micro-focused than Baran / Sweezy. Any suggestions? @dkmarxsoc.bsky.social @surbhikesar.bsky.social @isabellamweber.bsky.social @mauricehoefgen.bsky.social #EconSky

A fantastic talk by Jonathan Jenner on Labour coercion under colonialism in Kenya. So refreshing and such in-depth archival work.

Read abhorring article on race & caste in today’s Times of India. While yes, there are key diff b/w race & caste, by suggesting that race is simply based on skin colour & caste on conciliation hierarchy, author betrays a lack of understanding social construction of both! 1/3

It was very enriching to present my work on informal economy, surplus labour, & India's economic development at Delhi Economics Society. Thanks Surajit Das and Prachi Bansal for hosting and to those attending, esp. Prof Barbara Harriss-White, for such an engaging discussion!

Much of contemporary structural transformation & industrial policy lit has forsaken the labour question or expect it to be resolved w/ growth of industrial/services sector. w/ surplus labour as one of the most critical Q of contemporary development, this lit falls markedly short.

Releasing that link only works for SOAS login, here is general link for the exciting 1978 informal sector special issue: www.sciencedirect.com/journal/worl...

In 1978, World Development carried an exciting SI on informal sector: www-sciencedirect-com.soas.idm.oclc.org/journal/worl... Much richer than current mainstream debates ltd to earnings/pdty diff w/ formal sector, defining informality as choice vs last resort, or hw best to induce formalisation.

Sorry but first world researchers need to stop treating the developing countries as labs to come up with research ideas. These are serious concerns and development problems, the research on which needs to be driven by and embedded in a development agenda and not as a means to publications.

I also had a joke about informality, but it did not register. h/t @ihsaanbassier.bsky.social

I had a joke about capitalism, but someone else already stole it. h/t @ihsaanbassier.bsky.social

There is a tendency among many (heterodox?) economists to view Marx as one another in the line of classical political economists. But his was a sharp break from CPE. His understanding of “class” is very different than how Smith, Ricardo, and others use it. That distinction is key to understand Marx.

The AEA's annual conference is at the Hilton San Francisco Union Sqare, where @uniteherel2.bsky.social workers are on strike. The AEA should not do business with hotels where workers are striking. The AEA should not make attendees cross the picket line. #econtwitter @aeainformation.bsky.social

Here we go!! go.bsky.app/HGJz3QR

Got AEA & ASSA emails this morning abt hotel workers striking in SF? Want to figure out what it means & what your options are? See this analysis @shirkandsteal.bsky.social @jennifercohen.bsky.social & me, & our call to support 3 small ASSA policy changes #EconSky aaronsojourner.org/hotel-worker...

#EconSky if are planning to attend the AEA meetings 2025, be aware of the hotel workers’ strikes in hotels where the meetings will be held. Support the workers and do not cross picket lines. Here is the breakdown of the strike and what you can do: aaronsojourner.org/hotel-worker...

Churning numbers w/ @ihsaanbassier.bsky.social & @rosaabraham.bsky.social from India's economic census for a project: From the set of non-agri enterprises in India, >98% are informal or micro enterprises (with no hired or hired but < than 10 workers) + they acc for 79% of all workers in the set.

FINALLY its here: the (searchable!) database of nearly 30,000 pages of Federal Reserve Board meeting minutes I got through FOIA. As I've already started to write about, they significantly rewrite Federal Reserve history. www.crisesnotes.com/here-are-the...

At a paddy procurement centre in Jammu, where paddy is being procured by gov for a minimum support price of INR 23/kg while market price for this quality is 19/kg. Farmers from neighbouring villages transport the produce here to be cleaned, measured, & bought, ensuring a decent min price.

Here's our commentary on how the 2024 Economics Nobel integrates colonialism into economics, while leaving a colonial worldview intact (w/ @surbhikesar.bsky.social & @devikadutt.bsky.social). To explain how & why they do this, we go back to the colonial origins of Econ. www.epw.in/journal/2024...

Here’s why @ingridhk.bsky.social, @surbhikesar.bsky.social, and I think that the 2024 Economics ‘Nobel’ winning framework of understanding how institutions are formed and affect prosperity is Eurocentric, ahistorical, and wrong www.epw.in/journal/2024...
