Being able to accept that something is fucked up *before* it happens to you personally, is basically the whole litmus test of not being an absolute asshole. The closer the fucked up thing needs to get to affecting you, personally, before you believe it, the bigger an asshole you are.

Crime is an interesting concept, because if you steal some food or break into an empty home to use it for accomodation you go to jail. But if you steal billions and force millions of hungry people onto the streets, absolutely nothing happens.
