It’s an important time to develop a strong sense of your own values & integrity & lean into how you practice them Institutional leaders capitulating says a lot about institutions & those leaders, not about how we best proceed & so grateful for institutional leaders who continue to lead on the good

Universities really need to pay attention to this. It's not just about the indirects and frozen funds. If these layoffs continue, which by all signs are continuing and going well beyond probationary employees, ***these agencies will not be functional, including NIH, CDC, and NSF***

Again, stop using “DEI” pejoratively. And stop saying “DEI hire” even if mockingly towards someone as an attempt to point out hypocrisy. By doing so, you give credibility to the false idea that DEI is associated with lesser or not deserving. Don’t allow others to redefine or reframe.

Cuts to NSF expected to be at 50% reduction in force for an independent agency that fuels discovery and innovation. "The NSF budget was $9B, or 0.13% of the total [budget]." This is not about fiscal prudence. This is about killing universities. nanoscale.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-...

Woke up at 3am and have spent the past 2.5 hours here. Still struggling to find the balance between being informed and being sane.

Once again, Mr. Green (z”l)’s Unified Theory Of 🇺🇸 Politics remains unparalleled in its parsimonious explanatory power:

“This administration has made it clear that empirically verifiable knowledge itself is a threat to their plans, so they are attacking those of us who create knowledge.” newrepublic.com/article/1917...

Venting: I know it's asked completely innocently and I do not begrudge those who ask it, but of all vaccine-related questions I get, the one that really frustrates me is when people ask why children get so many vaccines. I know this comes from a genuine position of concern- but the framing...

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

My favorite things about living in Oregon: kind people, beautiful scenery, flowers in January, and allowed to use all letters of the alphabet #DEI

It was an honor to sign the guest book in the home of Anne Frank. I was here as a younger man and thought about her life as a dark chapter of history. Today, I can’t help but think of her story as one of caution. Our world is fragile, and it’s incumbent on us not to break it.

People leave academic jobs to be program officers at NSF and other agencies. Many programs have trouble recruiting for these permanent positions. The damage this will do to US science will be long lasting. #academicsky

Out of the 12,000 civil rights complaints the Education Department has put on hold since Trump took office: • 6,000 relate to mistreatment of disabled students • 1,000 are specific to sexual harassment/violence • 3,200 pertain to racial discrimination

Come work in this wonderful place with us! #academicsky #highered #edusky

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.” I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

We need politicians to stop worrying about what’s in it for them if they stand up, but what’s lost if they don’t. #BlackHistoryMonth #Resist

Several Department of Education employees told ProPublica they were directed not to contact students and schools about their pending civil rights cases. “We’ve been essentially muzzled,” an attorney said. By @jsmithrichards.bsky.social and @jodiscohen.bsky.social

I am really feeling a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen-esque coalition of former presidents, vice-presidents and cabinets to form a Nazi-fighting, fascist-crushing machine.

In @osucoed.bsky.social our #specialeducation degree is focused on disability as identity, not something to be fixed. Come study with us!

In a week of hard meetings, we took a moment for a laugh.

When a white student asked me why Black graduations exist, I told them that just because something isn’t made for you, meant for you, or about you doesn’t mean you’re being harmed/discriminated against. Rather than thinking of why you aren’t in a space, think of why others want a space of their own.

"When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something about it." - John Lewis. It's not enough to simply recognize something is wrong; we have a moral duty to act.

Public education is the backbone of American democracy. In the richest country in the history of the world, we cannot abandon our teachers and our public schools.

Even worse incompetence: they accidentally fired, then apparently today un-fired, hundreds of the people who manage America's nuclear weapons.

I’m just so scared.

“We’ve Been Essentially Muzzled”: Department of Education Halts Thousands of Civil Rights Investigations Under Trump Since Inauguration Day, the Office for Civil Rights has placed more than 10,000 student complaints related to disability access and sexual and racial harassment on hold.

Our college has a book group this year reading Disability is Human by Stephanie Cawthon. This is a great quote in the book, timely given the Dept of Ed's proposed demise as well as dismantling of DEIA (A=Accessibility). #AcademicSky #EduSky 1/3

I often see messages here and elsewhere pointing to “administrative bloat” in education. I can’t defend all of it but I know that often when we have to add new admin roles it’s to respond to some sort of unfunded policy mandate from up above. Bureaucracy doesn’t come cheap #academicsky #edusky

If you’re an Oregonian who’s glad you stayed home today because of the snow and ice, thank a NOAA scientist! Accurate forecasting by the National Weather Service—part of NOAA—is essential for emergency planning, but that’s under threat by the Trump administration.

Since RFK Jr just got confirmed today, I am taking this chance to share this wonderful @sciam.bsky.social piece on The Staggering Success of Vaccines www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-...

The authors of a Comment article in Nature Human Behaviour propose six actionable steps of allyship that researchers, faculty members and educators can engage in to foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive academia. #Academicsky 🧪

I’ve spent a lot of the last two weeks interviewing folks for various roles. I recognize that I presently live in a beautiful blue bubble but I’m here to say you can still tell us about how you contribute to DEIJ efforts even if you are in a place where you can’t say it. #AcademicSky

Recent science (STEM & social) brought forth the understanding of responding to pandemics, climate change, gun violence, and impacts of systemic racism and gender discrimination. By gutting research support and the highly educated federal workforce, this is nothing less than an assault on knowledge.

💯

The sad timing of new R1 designation announcements with the simultaneous attack on federal research funding. Oi. #AcademicSky

I think this is one of the most dismaying occurrences in the past month. The entire capitulation and lack of fight. Where are the freedoms to teach and learn that our universities were modeled after? #academicsky

DR. ANA CELIA ZENTELLA SPEAK ENGLISH ONLY!?: Challenging Linguistic Intolerance and Celebrating International Mother Language Day FEBRUARY 19, 2025 5-6:30 p.m. • MU Journey Room (104) Zoom at beav.es/ling-21925

One of the few things that will reportedly be saved at the US Dept of Ed is NAEP. Why? Because it feeds into the narrative that public schools are failing our kids. Let’s focus instead on how relentless testing is what is failing our schools and our kids. #EduSky

I have decided to limit my doom spiraling to no more than half of the week. #academicsky
