Someone told me once that regardless of degree completed, a "Physicist" is just one who studies physics. In that context, I like to think of myself a physicist moreso than any of my other professions or skills. Which are humorous in number at this point.

One year and four days ago. I was able to be in Shawnee National Forest for the eclipse. I used the screen on my camera to punch in so those who only had eclipse glasses could get a closer look. I didn't know about the "diamond ring" effect until after this was taken. #photography #eclipse

Side note, implementing martial law across the entirety of the U.S. would be impossible, and as far as I'm aware there's not really a mechanism for it (doesn't preclude an attempt). It could be done in major cities though, and that'd still be bad.

Kept getting "Matrix is Singular" or "Matrix must not contain infinites or NaNs" errors in my code. I double check my derivatives, they're correct, can't figure out what's going on. Folks, it was a swapped index, the entire time. A 30 second fix after hours of troubleshooting.

This is a good thread. I had to think a bit, because I *did* find a calculator to be immensely helpful in linear algebra. But not for the linear algebra part, just the arithmetic on scalars and coefficients. Understanding they were scalars and/or coefficeints was a separate cognitive task.

I'm often asked "Why physics?" I've often struggled to answer, usually it's something along the lines of physics being applicable to any field of science. At a happy hour for ECWG the other night I finally phrased it as "Physics is at the intersection of everything I find interesting."

Stormwater runoff (sewage) closed Goddard State Park, RI to swimming in 2013, it only re-opened for swimming in 2023 when bacteria levels finally dropped, this photograph is 2021, but it might as well be today I suppose.
