Right now, the U.S. is in a media crisis. Just in the nick of time, I'm starting a newsletter series about understanding media in the twenty-first century. I'll teach you how to challenge and change the messages that our media carries. Let's go. buttondown.com/thehypothesi...

hi! i'm holed up temporarily with a bunch of strangers, would like to find a board game that is easy to learn but has a lot of replayability — none of us to my knowledge are board game people so doesn't need to be anything to deep or crazy (in fact better if not) — board game nerds, i seek your aid!

Seems strange to lead with "get rid of factcheckers" instead of the new horrifically bigoted anti-LGBQT anti-moderation policies.

hi, cis folks! meet HB28. it's a sports ban on trans athletes. but actually, it's the first step to something much worse—see below. 45 sec call scripts for democrats & republicans in congress follow. if you've been saying you'd stand with trans people, now's the time.🧵 legiscan.com/US/bill/HB28...

idk if this makes sense but i feel like 2025 is the first S-Tier scifi-sounding year we've had since 1984.

my favorite anime is crobul beeepup

the corruption is so deep, so saturated into every fiber of govt at this point. that massive, monopolizing orgs are able to design and dictate such flagrantly anti-citizen laws, in the open, against the overwhelming will of the people… it’s just hard to feel like we actually live in a democracy.

I don’t think people understand how devastating the end of net neutrality, and consumer protections around internet connectivity, are going to be. Imagine the situation where you pay for 4 or 5 different streaming services, each with different “exclusives” — but for the Internet itself.

i really like piña coladas but i do not like getting caught in the rain at all — what do we think chat can we still make it work?

Musk wants to make American WeChat so bad and he is going to fail so badly. At least he has the state-sponsored nationalist censorship part cooking now, I’ll give him that.

Meta's great new idea, now that Facebook and Instagram are infected with AI slop, is to also let AI-generated characters made by users appear as actual accounts on the platforms. The last stage of "social" media is millions of bots giving each other thumbs-up reacts.

"i said ooh girl, shock me like an electric eel baby girl, send me home with your electric feel" has to be one of the highest [worst lyric]:[best song] ratios in pop music history imagine writing a song that rips so hard people ignore that being the *cornerstone* of THE HOOK

all of this discourse this morning is speaking to my heart 😌 — i reaaallly dislike the modern emphasis on ‘systematic cosmologies’ bc it’s actually deeply inhuman! mystery, intuition, and vibes are a huge part of the human experience. treating a world like a watchmaker is antithetical to life.

for some reason i didn’t really like Bobbie on the Expanse at first, something about the stoic tough girl trope fell flat for me, but now towards the end of s3 i would pledge my life and allegiance to her. incredible example of an actor settling into a role through a phenomenal character arc.

i love books a lot, i tend to read on kindle but then buy a physical copy from a local bookstore if i finish and like something. that said — something in me is rankled by people going to a bookstore and buying like 10 new release books. i think this might be a holdover from collecting records?

The end game of this was always "we have to end women's sports to protect cis women from trans women." I hammer at this periodically, but the fear-mongering here isn't just about anti-trans rhetoric, but about promoting an image of cis women as delicate flowers. www.lgbtqnation.com/2024/12/dona...
