But not arrested during the trip?

Also keep in mind it’s just an announcement so far.

The real quest was to find new populations of an exquisitely curious and beautiful parasitic plant (Balanophora fungosa ssp fungosa). Twelve hours crawling up and down the volcanic mountains was rewarded with many individuals spotted in a new area on a ridge line!

Is that a Hariri?

Once and future ruler of a unified China right there.

I gotta say, BMW seems to be represented in the local EV mix, and you will see Hyundais, Teslas, Porches, Rivians, smattering of Lucid Airs, today saw a new Polestar entrant, once spotted driving home an actual occurrence of someone who admits to purchase of a Fisker Ocean.

China still leads 3-5 years in EVs and smart shoppers now know they can go beyond Tesla for products. VW Bus! Rivians exist. But the product lineup of the Chinese would really blow you away in terms of maturing competition among upstart brands, legacy automakers still claim the U.S. landscape.

But then you have to be like, but oh gosh Trump please don’t apply the same intervention for chips as you do minerals! You can’t produce chips in a war-torn region well but for minerals, it may matter little.

We do have an article from Bonnie Glaser, who has deep knowledge of Taiwan, saying he’s “unlikely to take the initiative to use Taiwan as a bargaining chip. However, if Xi presents a specific task related to Taiwan, it is possible”

I think with Trump you get more uncertainty and a much wider variance in terms of outcomes. My concern, and this is more about Bluesky generally not you or your post, is that having a predisposition to dislike Trump, people will gravitate to the worst case scenarios.

For added context from Nikkei Asia: “Rubio is a conservative China hawk and avid Taiwan supporter who has introduced a number of bipartisan bills on Taiwan and raised the profile of Beijing's human rights violations long before it was trendy in Washington to do so.”

I think in a lot of other jurisdictions it’s legal? I believe it was only recently banned in HK.

Especially the prospect of US backing Taiwan’s ascension to international orgs seems to have slid by without comment.

Don’t really want to be in a position to defend Trump et. al. but at least on this site I think the overall vibe may be more pessimistic than warranted when it comes to Taiwan and Trump 2.0. Currently, looks like positive FP developments and negative economic ones for Taiwan emanating from the WH
comment in response to post
Benefit of the doubt is these are preliminary discussions, and Rubio has assured both Europe and Ukraine that once “real” negotiations start, they’ll have a seat at the table. Don’t know if this is the start of a pattern where Rubio walks back bonkers FP stances once promulgated.

Pizza Hut Taiwan currently offers hot-pot pizza, apparently in collaboration with a Michelin-starred chef. Hat tip to @goteamjosh.bsky.social whose keen eyes spotted this delish deep-dish. Pizza Hut’s website warns to avoid tilting during transport, or you’ll spill the soup!

That seems a bit convoluted? You’re not the first person I’ve seen who would normally celebrate this sort of thing decline to due to Trump

No, 100% sure that’s not Bridge. He’s like the Chicken Little of the military threat from China—but no advocate for appeasement.

And I was wrong to think the constitution assumes sovereignty—in fact it’s specifically mentioned!
comment in response to post
Yeah, no one’s gonna be “declaring independence” but I think the fact that *anyone* could without referendum or any other restraint/restriction is why you get Lai and the DPP explicitly stating they don’t need to because Taiwan already is.
comment in response to post
But why would declaring independence require a constitutional modification? Presumably the document as it stands already assumes sovereignty. You’re unlikely to draw up a basic law without it!

What, really? Reuters? It’s like the Canadian Bloomberg. I wouldn’t expect China to have a lot of leverage over their content. It’s not the SCMP or anything.

I’m thinking it’s just more likely he’s happy to co-opt rhetoric-du-jour to gain political power than having been an ardent nazi his whole life.

Note that the section header is “could Taipei declare a ‘Republic of Taiwan’” and it ends with, “The KMT strongly opposes any attempts to change the name of Republic of China.”
comment in response to post
I’m not so sure that’s what the article says
I think it’s that in order to change the name of the country a referendum would be needed.

(The weirdest thing was something along the lines of Taiwanese need to—at a bare minimum—have the military fervor of Israelis to get boots-on-the-ground US military assistance.)
comment in response to post
Not the weirdest thing he’s said about Taiwan, but, luckily, no one needs to “destroy” TSMC fabs as the litho machines already have remote kill switches. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Do note that this doc states “Any tags or mentions with your old handle will still point to your account.” While this is referencing an initial change to a URL from a Bsky-provided handle, again would be highly surprising for it to not be the case for all subsequent. bsky.social/about/blog/4...

I mean, I would be very surprised if that didn’t happen! But I’m not tech support

Flag thing be more of a “coincidence” but Musk was naming things X is like 2000. Any far-right tendencies seem to have appeared like two decades later, so I’d be more likely to this may be an actual coincidence.
