In reading Simone de Beauvoir's Ethics of Ambiguity, I recognize in her categorizations of types — e.g. the nihilist, the adventurer, the passionate man, the tyrant — figures whom would score high on more than 1 of the dark tetrad personality traits popularly discussed in psychology today.

1985, man. 1985.

Theoretical abstractions, & ideological extremism, drains people of the affirmation, & recognition that all of us, not just Americans or Westerners or Christians or whatever group, are here on this globe in existential tension. If you’re not in solidarity with this, we have a serious problem.

What is a rebel?

"I'm glad he met you first." Maybe the most meaningful line in all of Spielberg.

When a certain set of ideas, & their articulation, gains an individual significant adulation, money, & influence, I imagine that individual being hesitant to challenge that set of ideas in a way that may shift, change or evolve them. Yet, not only is this an intellectual failure, but a moral one.

Trump, his Cabinet, and many MAGA hats — I have friends or rather former friends, and even family members, and colleagues, whom I would say don't exhibit these traits as individuals, but who have increasingly shown the willingness to excuse them. Which I consider just as dangerous & destructive.

You guys can have Jordan Peterson and Joe Rogan, I'll keep Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers.

Trump’s not a Nazi, Dude. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, at least it's an ethos.

All these men-need-to-be-men influencers and podcasters making their fame and fortunes from typing on keyboards, sitting on their asses in air-conditioned studios, and filming videos of themselves with their personal trainers. You know, real ancient warrior shit.

Rewatched Dunkirk for the first time since seeing it on the big screen in '17. As before, gave me goose bumps. A phenomenal achievement. As if Bresson's A Man Escaped was transformed into a triptych. And this actor, as Tommy, was a casting coup. Humanity in those eyes.

From Jordan Peterson to Joe Rogan, from Trump to Vance, from Russell Brand to Theo Von, from Nick Fuentes to Charlie Kirk, their abilities and economic success are just the modern, real world version of Rumpelstiltskin and his thread.

VIBE CHECK What I'm reading: Camus’ The Plague What I'm watching: Dunkirk (myself) and Kubo and the Two Strings (my daughter) What I'm listening to: First Man soundtrack

Another thing that has alarmed me is my recent experiences with friends (and a brother) from my adolescence (the 80s) who, at the time, would have been described as liberal, even progressive. Now, they are openly embittered, contemptuous, & conspiratorial. Does marriage and family do that to people?

Saw this post. Went through 100s of replies. Only a handful mentioned the math error or typo of it being 56 years from 1969 instead of 76. No one mentioned the 5 subsequent Apollo trips until 1972. A third replied that the Apollo 11 landing was a fake. Know I shouldn’t be disturbed but I am.
