I live in Taiwan. I am fluent in Mandarin, but completely illiterate. I am surrounded by ads, but they are in an alien language. This insulates me most of the time.

I am not American. I follow American history and politics because they are fascinating. At least they were. Now they are ambiguous and enervating. I hope their democracy survives because here in Taiwan, ours indirectly depends on it.
