and my mother was dead by the time I was nineteen.
When I turned eighteen, I escaped to the military.
It was the only way I saw of surviving poverty.
Within a year of joining, I was deployed to clean up in Desert Storm. I came back sick and I have been struggling with gulf war illness ever since.
