How awesome is this!!!

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on. slate.com/technology/2...

“Saskatchewan has 🇨🇦’s 3rd-most emissions-intensive electricity system. The province generates 26%of all the country’s electricity emissions, despite only producing 4%of the power”

Saskatchewan’s decision to continue running coal plants would make it an unnecessary outlier and the last province to do so. The province has some of the best solar and wind resources in the country, which are only getting cheaper alongside battery storage www.theglobeandmail.com/business/art...

My understanding is that the core mechanics of a LLM means it can never be taught to be right. That's just not what an LLM does or will ever be able to do. It can only be more convincing while it is wrong, which is why they're fundamentally useless

this is what it comes down to. some people have been like "well technically you can get an LLM to not lie all the time by extremely limiting what it can say and only training it on a few things, or by writing another program on top" but then you don't need an LLM

Cool study from @bikewaysto.bsky.social detailing a traffic count on Bloor Street taken on June 11 with a camera at 412 Bloor West. During the peak of the afternoon rush, bikes outnumbered cars. I repeat: bikes outnumbered cars. drive.google.com/file/d/1ctd4...

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Premier Doug Ford is being accused of making “deeply offensive and racist” remarks about First Nations on the eve of a key meeting with Indigenous chiefs. “There’s going to be a point that you can’t just keep coming hat in hand all the time to the government," the premier said.

StatCan doesn't parse by new college graduates, but our returning students in Canada had an unemployment rate of 🚨20.1%🚨 in May (was 11.4% in May 2022); and 15-24 year olds not returning to school had an unemployment rate of 12.2%. The overall unemployment rate hit 7%, highest since Sept. 2016.

we are fucked

The miniscule amount of prison time men in Canada get for killing women is horrifying.

Private equity firms couldn't even keep Hooters open because their entire purpose is to destroy companies in order to make as much money as possible but sure, this will probably be fine.

Two strikes against carbon capture. First, even if it works, it's more expensive than switching to clean renewables. And second, it doesn't work at scale. Those pushing carbon capture as a panacea for Canada's fossil fuel cartel are greenwashing. #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy

American wine sales to Canada have dropped 93%. There has been a huge uptake in wines from Canada and other jurisdictions to replace the American brands. Way to go Donald.

Google and Meta search both report that Cape Breton Island has its own time zone 12 minutes ahead of mainland Nova Scotia time because they are both drawing that information from a Beaverton article I wrote in 2024

in case no one ever mentioned it to you before you can wake up every morning and not be a total piece of shit

In the USA, a recent series of Executive Actions pose a substantial threat to the nation's health and health equity. In our latest issue, a new Comment highlights why and how academic medicine must champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Read this & more ▶️ tinyurl.com/6fn6uvr7

If the sky in Toronto looks and smells a little weird today, it’s because there’s smoke from all the forest fires in the air. And this will only get worse unless we speed up action against the climate crisis. #topoli #onpoli

insane assertion. just pop open the Covid death rate numbers and it's clear beyond question Sweden did WAY WAY worse than its Nordic neighbors

Pretty egregious error from this book: The authors say Swedish deaths fell by 2.3% during the pandemic, proving that the country's lax lockdown strategy worked. But they misread their source: Mortality is only down if you remove the COVID deaths. research.abo.fi/ws/portalfil...

New Data: U.S. Wine Exports to Canada Approaching Zero. In April 2025, U.S. wine exports to Canada — the country’s most important wine export market — fell by US$32.5 million, a 92.2% decrease compared to April 2024, dropping to just US$2.73 million.

This could be the most "log off, bro" tweet in the history of tweets, which is quite an accomplishment when you consider all of the wild stuff that's been posted there. (see the thread for other candidates 😬)

Harvard researcher Dr Sarah Fortune was only two years away from creating a vaccine that could have saved the 1.25 million people killed each year by tuberculosis. But last month, she received a letter telling her that the $60 million grant funding her research was being halted by President Trump.

the people here probably already know this but really spread this far and wide: tell your normal offline friends and family to stop using ChatGPT for legal advice. it's happening constantly now. I'm always explaining to people why the advice this silly thing gave them is not real legal advice.

Canada’s gynecologists say COVID-19 vaccination remains safe and strongly recommended during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, a day after Secretary Kennedy a longtime anti-vaccine activist -- declared the vaccine is no longer recommended according to him. www.ctvnews.ca/health/artic...

Detective collected video footage but never watched it. He collected her used clothing but never sent it for forensic testing. And he never filed for a warrant to get the files from Hockey Canada. And y'all wonder why less than 10% of victims in Canada report to the police.

Canada should be learning from the British nightmare but as Doug Ford chops his way through a third term, I fear we are not 🫤

While people are posting outrage over Pierre Poilievre billing the Canadian taxpayer around $8.9 million just for his living expenses in 2024, I think it's more effective to point out that this equates to over $24,000 per day. Per. Day. $24,000. Every single day, including weekends.

It’s necessary to repeat this message. #Measles is being spread in Canada by unvaccinated people who live here.

Why we should care about the measles outbreaks: -In wealthy countries, 0.1%-0.2% of measles cases result in death -In poorer countries or populations, up to 10% of cases will die -15-30% of measles cases will require hospitalization Thread [1/8]

Private, for-profit surgical and diagnostic facilities get $280m in the Ontario budget These investor-owned facilities cost the public purse 2-3x more than hospitals for the same procedure www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

There is no amount of screaming that will express how angry I am for the women of America right now, and no amount of caution I can issue fellow Canadians to never, EVER, take our abortion rights for granted. Eyes WIDE open. Never believe them when they say they won't do it. They will.

The numbers are in for the first month of tariffs. Canada's total exports dropped by -0.2%. That is because Canada's exports to Germany increased by 52.2%, UK by 93.7%, South Korea by 27%, Netherlands by 74.8%, and Italy by 22.3%.

@liberalca.bsky.social, people like @evansolomon.bsky.social are Cabinet Ministers now and should be posting on this platform. Our politicians shouldn’t expect us to be on X. Many of us consider that platform harmful.
