the last samurai is about a brilliant but deeply dysfunctional classicist single mother raising a kid with the parenting methods that brought us J.S. mill and yo-yo ma. at age eleven, the kid ventures out to find his real dad. kurosawa's seven samurai is a prerequisite to reading this book

dictionary of the khazars is a sort of hypertext, comprising three warring encyclopedias from different religions purporting to tell the story of the khazars' conversion. they can be read in any order. gorgeous prose. makes you question assumptions about what a novel should be.

hard landing is a mostly US-focused history of the airline industry up to the mid-1990s, when the book was published. excellent read full of larger-than-life characters. crabgrass frontier is a history of US suburbanization up to the 1980s, when it was published.
