Arthur was born in 1884 in Leeds. The Society was set up to popularise his many books (not just for children) and encourage research into his life and work. https://arthur-ransome.org/

All roads (and rails) are leading to the Arthur Ransome Society International Annual General Meeting starting tomorrow evening down south. Like in the 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' we need to remember to take our own towels!

After Ransome published his book about Oscar Wilde there was a very upsetting court case. lauraleeauthor.wordpress.com/2020/05/04/d...

Dodie Smith, 1968, photo by Jane Bown. Smith, author of 'I Capture the Castle' and 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians', was born in Whitefield, near Bury, and spent her childhood in Old Trafford.

Today in 1916 Shackleton & five men set off in a 6m open boat from barren Elephant Island to South Georgia to seek help. It was over 700 miles away, they would face hurricane force winds & mountainous seas. I crossed the Southern Ocean in their wake…In a much bigger boat.

Keep an eye out for Red-necked Phalarope. Very rare breeding bird.

In Catalonia, Spain, April 23rd is a holiday where people exchange books and roses with loved ones as the streets fill with book stalls and flower vendors.

From Tina in Canada. "Husband took the three oldest to the UK last month for two weeks to visit his family, and surprised them with three days in the Lake District so they could live out their Arthur Ransome dreams by staying in a stone cottage and going sailing on Coniston Water. It was awesome."

If you're thinking about PG study in the field of literature, heritage and cultural studies, and want to find out more about our MA Literature, Romanticism & the Lake District, you can join an online course talk by our programme leader on 30 April at 6pm: tinyurl.com/2338575h

Call it coincidence, call it a Norfolk 'Bermuda Triangle'. Six boats lost so far this year and counting, all on a short stretch of the Broads, with no clear cause. Just a widening patch of wreckage and questions. @eastangliabylines.co.uk @owensennitt.bsky.social

Just finished this 5m long drystone seating area on the banks of the loch. It will hold a single piece of oak across the three protruding stones to form a bench. Built by hand, no mortar, just time, attention, and stone. All materials sourced locally. #Scotland #Nature #Environment #Sustainable

I got into eel history by studying the Dutch eel ships on the Thames. We don't generally remember them much now, but they were there from the c.1470 - 1938. They used to be low-key famous, even appearing in Nicolas Sarony's 1929 cigarette card collection, "Ships of All Ages." 🗃️🧪

OK, yesterday I flicked past carbon copies of letters to Enid Blyton and Arthur Ransome, not to mention a publisher thanking a new author for a brace of pheasants ... but didn't unearth anything as exciting on my own topic. 😕 Wish me luck today! #ArchiveHighsAndLows
