Tyranny requires your fear, your silence, and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage.

This. I once took time to discuss elections with my students -- because it was their 1st election & there was no one who would talk to them about them. And yes. The job of a college professor is to explain complicated things so that students can understand them -- AND evaluate them for themselves.

Crockett: "Down in Alabama, who's broke. Down in Louisiana, who's broke. I can go through pretty much the entire south and tell you that they're broke and rely on a lot of welfare from the government. To be perfectly honest, it is tax dollars from these big blue states...we're in the find out phase"

Our district on the February 14, 2025 “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Education… Do not comply in advance? 🙃

In the piece below, I talk a lot about mass messaging (posters, stickers, etc.) to keep the focus not just on enmity towards Trump and Musk but the impact of their actions. In case it's helpful, I put together some examples! Not perfect, but they get the job done (feel free to steal/share)

I find the doomers in my replies yelling “there won’t be future elections!!” exhausting - (1) don’t give them credit for something they haven’t done & (2) there is no mechanism for cancelling elections! Our elections aren’t run by the fed govt; they’re run by states, counties & municipalities.

Part of why I launched my newsletter on Ghost (now that people are talking again about Substack's Nazi problem, to which I'd add that Substack has Marc Andreessen and Y-Combinator behind it, which is at a minimum repellant)....

NEW: GOP North Carolina State Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin is in court trying to steal an election by retroactively changing voting rules. The case could set a dangerous precedent for future elections, argues @billycorriher.bsky.social.

While I was having my digestive system looked at from the inside, here's what Democrats were doing:

“We must build robust, independent, social movements and fight to teach the truth — because no executive order, no political intimidation, and no forced ignorance can erase history, so long as we refuse to stop teaching it.” - @jessehagopian.bsky.social truthout.org/articles/tru...

👇🎯 We have normalized the total bypassing of Article I of the Constitution. A comprehensive societal & institutional failure. The Republic we all claim to pledge allegiance to is completely inoperable right now, & no one seems to care.

aging well, sadly

Major thanks to @downhomenc.bsky.social and @carolinafederation.bsky.social for the opportunity to phone bank this Sunday. Talked to first time voters, veterans, students, parents about how to confront the North Carolina Supreme Court attack on 60,000 votes. Voter outreach = less anxious scrolling

No, they're not caught between anything. Stop it. The fact that AI may be used or useful in future jobs does not create a single dilemma at all for college students in how to actually complete their coursework. This is all nonsense & excuses for not doing the reading & learning how to think & write.
