I'm not saying that it's been a hard week, but my kids voluntarily washed my car. On. A. Saturday.

An issue popped up on another platform after I posted an article about IRS data sharing with other federal agencies. Clarifying here, too, in case you have the same questions. (1/3)

The number of tax returns received dipped again, a trend that hasn’t changed since the season opened on January 27, 2025. (The data that includes the last day of the filing season, April 15, 2025, will be available on April 25, 2025.) www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

Some taxpayers like to hang on to every piece of tax-related paper, from receipts to returns, forever. Others do just the opposite: they shred and purge immediately. Here's your quick guide to what to keep and what to throw out after Tax Day. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

The chief information officer at the IRS will leave his position at the end of the month. Rajiv Uppal's departure follows several high-profile defections. Uppal's domain included the current IRS information technology division, a key area of focus for the agency. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

A lot of being a parent is saying, "Don't break anything" over and over.

A reminder for tax pros that scammers will try to take advantage of the busy-ness of the season and hope to catch you off guard (yes, some pros are still working on returns). I'm getting a ton of ShareFile emails, as well as the "I missed the filing date" emails. Let's be careful out there!

Me, explaining that sometimes, I don't think that I'm taken seriously. Daughter: Um, Mom? You have cookie crumbs on your forehead. Maybe that explains it? #parenting

There are a lot of great tax preparers. Find one. And regularly communicate with them.
A taxpayer recently discovered that their preparer didn’t file state returns for several years. The fed returns were filed, and the taxpayer assumed the state returns were filed, too. (1/2)

Reports indicate the Trump administration plans to eliminate the IRS Direct File program after the current filing system. Here’s a look at the program’s history—and the controversy. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

Thanks to everyone who sent kind words and thoughts about my mom. Unfortunately, the tumble at the airport was serious. She is currently in the ER awaiting surgery (bone break). Your continued good thoughts and prayers are appreciated. It's a stinky way for her to have to spend Easter weekend.

Don't believe those who say that tax pros don't want positive change at the IRS. Folks who suggest that tax pros only benefit from a complex tax code and outdated/understaffed IRS don't understand the work. (1/5)

House Democrats have sent a letter seeking an unredacted copy of the memorandum of understanding allowing the IRS to share immigrant tax data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Court filings included a redacted version of the memo. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

April 15 is Tax Day for most of the country—some exceptions apply—but that hasn’t always been the case. The U.S. income tax system has changed quite a bit over the years—and that includes more than the due date for Form 1040. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

This. All day long. What many taxpayers may not understand is that the "easy" questions (did you file? did you include all your forms?) can be answered by computers. The "hard" questions (did you hide income via a maze of offshore companies?) are those that IRS will struggle with following cuts.

It's genuinely hard to express to sort of normal not politically plugged in non-lawyers *how* lawless the Trump administration is, and I think that's some part of the problem. You sound like you're hyperventilating, but it's just a flat description of what is going on.

Update on my mom: She's not coming for a visit because she is being admitted to the hospital. I am so sad and worried. She's a pretty tough cookie (cancer survivor, for one), but this is never easy. Please think good thoughts.

Happy Tax Day to those who celebrate! (And be kind to your tax pro... it's been quite the season.)

Nobody likes writing a big check on Tax Day, but there is some good news: April 15 also means specials, freebies, and deals. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

I feel like this is one industry where you need to get the name right... Hi %$firstname$%, The wait is over—the Grief Support Specialist Coach Certification Program is officially open for enrollment, but only for a limited time!

Thanks to everyone who sent good vibes my mom's way. Unfortunately, the flight was delayed (8 hours, I think, and counting?) and the fall was apparently worse than we thought (she ended up seeking medical care). She's at home now and we're hoping things turn around...

The IRS announced today tax relief for individuals and businesses in the entire state of Tennessee affected by severe storms and flooding that began on April 2, 2025. These taxpayers now have until Nov. 3, 2025, to file tax returns and make tax payments. www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs...

The IRS announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in the entire state of Arkansas affected by severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that began on April 2, 2025. These taxpayers now have until Nov. 3, 2025, to file tax returns and make tax payments. www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs...

Live in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, or Montgomery County and need help with home heating bills? Pennsylvania’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) applications remain open through April 18, 2025. More on how to apply, applications, and local LIHEAP hotlines: www.lasp.org/news/liheap-...

Y'all think good thoughts for my mom. She fell at the airport while coming to see me. She is now in a wheelchair at the gate, but her flight is delayed for 3 hours. She is a diabetic and quiet, and I fear she will not speak up if she's hungry. (1/2)

Updates: The payment date error on the IRS website has been fixed. The typos for Form 1040X have also been corrected. The status pages for some taxpayers still appear to be wrong (showing as processing when they are not). (1/2)
