I met with my VITA team today and saw our portable office for the first time—it's a 50# tote (not a typo) complete with a printer and other resources that we'll be taking to the villages to prepare tax returns.

The latest edition of our free @forbes.com newsletter is out! This week, beneficial ownership information (BOI) is back on after a court ruling. Plus: IRS job losses, tax privacy, Congress and the budget, name changes, taxes on tips, tax deadlines, trivia & more. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

Nixon Administration abuses led to the passage of strict tax privacy laws. That’s one reason moves by DOGE to access sensitive data are so controversial. Here’s what you need to know about taxpayer privacy. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

It's a little warmer than usual in Anchorage this week, but I'm not mad about it. It made for a lovely walk. (And I'll be cold soon enough—we fly out to the villages on Sunday!)

It seems that scammers are taking advantage of the concerns about Social Security and privacy. This email is circulating—it's a scam. This is a reminder not to click on links from emails purporting to be from the government. If in doubt, go directly to the source and log in.

The IRS is expected to fire thousands of workers this week—in the middle of tax season. The cuts follow on the heels of other reductions to IRS personnel and the IRS budget and a move that blocked some IRS workers from the delayed resignation program. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

A court has reinstated beneficial ownership information (BOI) reporting requirements under the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA). Companies have also been granted a little extra time—through March 21, 2025—to file. More changes may be on the way. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

At my gate, waiting to board for Alaska. Really excited and honored to be part of this IRS VITA program. Thx to ABDC and @americanbar.org (tax section) for believing in service to others.

I know it's the season, but I have two Forms 2848 that haven't been processed by CAF in more than a month. My CAF info (COA) hasn't been updated. The hold time at IRS ACS is over a half hour (no callback option). This feels like old times. I know it's going to get worse. #TaxSky

TPM reported on the DOGE demand for "extensive system access" to the IRS last week. talkingpointsmemo.com/news/doge-ir...

These winds are crazy. Be safe, SEPA!

I appreciate that it's supply and demand, but it's still wild to me that you can stay at a hotel for one night for a particular price, and often, you can expect to pay double (or more) the next night for the same room and experience.

The latest edition of our free @forbes.com newsletter is out! This week: IRS CI is in the news, including its role in taking down a fake cancer scam. Plus: A slow start to the filing season, budget movement, refusing to file, rescheduling cannabis, #tax trivia & more. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

Have you seen Scamanda?
For years, Amanda Riley faked having cancer. But law enforcement, including IRS Criminal Investigation, helped put a stop to the fraud. I talked with retired CI special agent Arlette Lee about the scam. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

Nikos Karelis is impressing in Mumbai in the latest stop of an eventful career that has seen him play in six countries. Read about where his career has taken him, featuring exclusive quotes from the Greek international. #ISL #IndianSuperLeague #MumbaiCity thesoccergoal.com/2025/01/29/n...

In light of the news that DOJ leadership is forcing career prosecutors to either dismiss the criminal case against Eric Adams or be fired, it seems like a good time to remind everyone that the judge can refuse to dismiss. That rule exists precisely in order to prevent corrupt dismissals.

An amazing resignation letter to Bove from an AUSA who worked on the Adams case. Money quote: “I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me.”

Since my kids are at the Eagles Super Bowl parade today (!), it feels like a great day to throw back to this football—and tax—story: www.forbes.com/sites/kellyp...

2024 was a record-breaking year for legal cannabis sales—but 2025 may look a little different. Weeks after the DEA signaled that it might be putting the brakes on efforts to reschedule cannabis, two Senators introduced a bill that would continue to ban tax deductions for cannabis businesses. (1/3)

The Department of Homeland Security has asked Treasury Secretary Bessent to deputize IRS agents to help crack down on immigration. A Feb. 7 letter suggests IRS workers could assist DHS with auditing employers charged with hiring illegal immigrants as well as investigating human trafficking. (1/2)

Listening to Spotify and just heard The Corrs' Breathless. One of my best friends once misheard one of the lyrics as "Go on... make me breakfast," and to this day, I can't hear it any other way. What's your favorite misheard lyric?

Again, Twitter WON this case (decisively) at the district court level. The 9th Circuit made it clear that Twitter would win on appeal at oral args. And now it decided to just hand over $10 million to Trump. www.cnbc.com/2025/02/12/e...
