He would plot in his map segments of a walk and work out the paces. He would then use his prison time to pace round the yard. In his head he was walking round Europe. He would note on the right coming up is a church, or walking over a bridge river crossing.

He would start conversations with the guards, and then tell the higher officers “That guard talked to me” getting them in trouble. In his cell he had a map of Europe. And because of the separation from general population he had yard time on his own.

One of the prisoners he watched over was Rudolph Hess. He was kept separate from the rest of the prisoners, and no guards were to be left alone with him. Talking to him was a punishable offence.
