Thank you for standing up for American science.

Pope Skinny Pop VIII thank you very much

I am listening to this audiobook now and thoroughly enjoying it. So much great information presented in an entertaining manner.

We wrote this Neuroview to get the word out about the extremely exciting and important NIH funded work happening in the pain field and how it has the potential to really change pain treatment in the coming years www.cell.com/neuron/fullt... We did not imagine how rapidly things would be dismantled.

New STAT story on a JAMA paper on the NIH grant terminations www.statnews.com/2025/05/08/t... 1/n

One of grants frozen at Cornell: $6.7M (4 yrs) to develop heart pumps for babies born w/ heart defects. It took decades of work to get to point of prepping device for in-human clinical trials. No private company could do this. The cruelty of the Trump administration is heartbreaking. So to speak.

UTD has a new President: www.dallasnews.com/news/educati... Prabhas V Moghe from Rutgers

I think this assessment from @joshtpm.bsky.social is totally spot on: talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/why-d... it also aligns perfectly with what I saw in my brief time being around the Silicon Valley crowd.

A timely viewpoint from the PRECISION Human Pain Network, highlighting some of the incredible research happening with NIH funding www.cell.com/neuron/fullt...

“I asked ChatGPT,” well I asked your mom and she said you’ve always been a disappointment

This is a fantastic thread on a great new preprint from @michaelshiloh.bsky.social lab entitled: Mycobacterial Phenolic Glycolipid Triggers ATP-Mediated Neuronal P2X3 Signaling and Cough www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

More excellent writing and analysis from @dereklowe.bsky.social www.science.org/content/blog...

🦠💨 Why do some TB strains make you cough more? Cough isn’t just an annoying sign and symptom of active tuberculosis - it’s one way that Mycobacterium tuberculosis spreads from person to person. 1/14 #Tuberculosis #CoughScience #Aerobiology #Neuroimmunology #Microbiology youtu.be/9qqHOKUXY5U?...

you are too kind Raj, thank you!

This paper is now published in Nature Communications www.nature.com/articles/s41... Huge congrats to Stephanie Shiers on this magnum opus updating our view of Nageotte's legendary pathology work in the early 1900s.

Gave a talk at my parents’ retirement community to describe how science is done, and what is at stake. There was a ton of interest, and anyone can do this. Get the word out about how science affects everyone. I’m happy to share slides with anyone who asks- just get in touch! youtu.be/BY_SFgi-Cig

This is quite interesting. We also observed this in our study of ADORA3 expression in human DRG. Beautiful staining in this one.

Your regular reminder that NSF grants built the internet and helped the U.S. dominate tech.

Thank you for coming to my talk Tasha. I was totally overwhelmed by how many people came and by the positive response. #USASP is such a special community

If you were planning to submit Neuroscience related T32s to PAR-22-265, PAR-24-126, or PAR-24-108, note those are now expired and you need to submit through PAR-25-168. See this notice: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

The terrible news keeps on rolling in.

I was honored to receive a big award from USASP today. I sent pics and a video to my wife and 9 year old daughter. My daughter responded with one word: “Sigma”

Check out our latest @biorxiv-neursci.bsky.social preprint from our PRECISION Human Pain Network project www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... "Type I interferons enhance human dorsal root ganglion nociceptor excitability and induce TRPV1 sensitization" led by Úrzula Franco-Enzástiga

Some pretty remarkable findings here on serum transfer from nerve injured mice www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Here is a link to the full @60minutes.bsky.social segment! 👀 a nice surprise at 5:25 AND one of our very own, Kristin Weinstein makes an appearance at 9 mins. #StandUpforScience #scienceforall #saveourscience www.cbsnews.com/news/scienti...

University leaders need to understand: they are holding INCREDIBLY good cards. It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have that—AND winning legal arguments.

Yet another study showing beneficial effects of metformin for pain - this time in OA pain. Effects on pain are modest, but better than placebo. Effects on WOMAC scores are more impressive. Also no sex differences observed. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

An example of what we in the NIH Intramural program can accomplish. Excited to share our latest paper in close collaboration with Nick Ryba's group. We examined how inflammation transforms representation in somatosensory neurons to cause pain. Lots of surprises here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I quite like both cities!

A powerful call has just gone up on the website of the @aacu.org : “A Call for Constructive Engagement” signed by almost 200 college & university presidents (more sure to join), from community colleges to R1s! #academicsky #edusky @academic-chatter.bsky.social www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-c...

I hope anyone interested in ML/AI in drug discovery reads this excellent post from @dereklowe.bsky.social www.science.org/content/blog.... I have been reading his posts on this topic since I was a postdoc (when his original one cited in the link was posted) and I can tell you he has been spot on.

To everyone (justifiably) applauding @harvard.edu 's response to the fed. administration's demands: that letter is only part of the story. Harvard's new website went public in coordination with Harvard Pres. #AlanGarber 's letter. It's completely revamped--and it's brilliant. www.harvard.edu. (1/8)

For years I have been told in paper and grant review that acute pain is not a big medical problem and can be dealt with readily with available tools. Today I am helping to care for my 82 year old step dad who just had a hip replacement revision. His acute pain is totally uncontrolled.

Actually. How the US benefitted from outsourcing its research interests to experts in universities.

Agreed. This is preposterous framing. Have they never heard of Vannevar Bush’s vision for the partnership between the government and our universities and research institutes? The idea was to create a research and education powerhouse that would lead the world.
