holodeck vs holodeck pro

Once again super happy at the work www.bikeforgood.org.uk did on my bike today. Rescued the chainset with a new middle ring, new chain, cassette, cables. Cleaned and reset both mechs, now have smooth changing and better gear ratios. Highly recommended!

Jings, 1st #trombone part for 'Quietude' would be wild enough without having the 2nd trombone trying to play exactly the same thing in parallel a semitone below!

Getting a lesson in #accordion register symbols from Sofia and Melia :) #music #composition #notation

Wasn't sure if composer Tom Johnson's (self-) publishing house would still be accepting orders, following his recent passing. But a nice fellow there sent this on to me. Been thinking a lot about permutations in melodic writing recently, so looking forward to reading this.

At Glad Cafe to see my old friend Steve Kettley's band Orange Claw Hammer

I'm quite enjoying that one of the staff roles in my draft programme handbook is for next year is 'Head of [tbc]' #AcademicSky

Ring necked duck at Queen's Park pond, been looking out for it for ages :)

Help! How to articulate a philosophy of music as performance _without_ mentioning either Christopher Small or Nicholas Cook? Asking for a friend.

A simple journey from Glasgow's Southside to the east takes a feat of exhausting mental maths - to the point just walking for two hours seems more appealing. How could the city sync up its transport? And why hasn't it?

Monday morning. Should I try to race through all the unanswered trivial emails from staff and students over the weekend, then get stuck into real work? If I do it that way might never get to the real work… Or do the real work first…? Or answer the emails on Sunday night…? #AcademicSky

Starting a sorting algorithm series, but it’s in music notation

It's not really a thing, but 1 Feb would be as good a day as anyway to switch away from Meta :)

Just realised I've spent a good chunk of my weekend working on a conference proposal. Is this a bad thing, as in unpaid overtime? Or a good thing, as in doing something I'm passionate about? Discuss. (And anyway… would not have got the head space to do it during the academic week!) #AcademicSky

Academic chores: approaching deadline, cutting the abstract down to 200 words, fiddling with passive constructions, and trying not to use the same abstract noun twice. #AcademicSky

Been getting back into shape over the last week or so in order to be ready for the arrival of six new clarinet solo pieces arriving tomorrow, which I'll be workshopping with students at the RNCM two weeks today. Fun! (Also: quite a lot of work!)

If you compose a piece of music in 6/8 but notate it in 2/4 for the sake of convenience, is it still in 6/8? Asking for a friend. #music #composition

On the blog today: more 12/8, or rather, some old 12/8 in connection with the new 12/8 www.jsimonvanderwalt.com/blog #composition

New year, sketching a new piece :) not sure where this is going yet though www.jsimonvanderwalt.com/blog/2025/01...

Yes, to which I'll add - keep making that half-broken Pd patch, keep collecting field recordings of your washing machine, keep producing dance music that inflicts foot injuries, keep doing exactly what you're doing as it's a hell of a lot better than what a lot of people are doing with their time.
