The nightmare that awaits if YIMBYs successfully legalize townhouses!

Excited about this FREE webinar by Urban Phoenix Project that's focusing on Arizona's housing crisis #housing #zoningreform #YIMBY 🏘 www.urbanphoenixproject.org/unpacking-ar...

New op-ed: Arizona zoning needs reform. Phoenix electeds recently cited @zoningatlas.bsky.social data showing that suburbs devote as little as 1% of their land to multi-family housing: archive.is/QYJz3 Legislators should use the NZA (www.zoningatlas.org/atlas) to come up with data-driven solutions.

A reminder: You can give your feedback on Tempe's Missing Middle plans online until March 5th. Tell the city you want to see the state's missing middle provisions expanded citywide, to allow more affordable housing options like townhomes and duplexes. www.tempe.gov/government/c...

Arizona requires Tempe to allow missing middle one mile from their downtown urban core At a meeting tonight, they described this area as “about the smallest…we could manage” When asked if they had even *considered* doing more than the bare minimum, the answer was a flat “no”

Starting today, you can also give feedback online until 3/5. Tell city staff you want to see the Missing Middle provisions required by state law expanded to cover all residential areas in the city. www.tempe.gov/government/c...

NEW: This Wednesday, Tempe will hold meetings on expanding Missing Middle housing. We think Tempe should go beyond what state law requires and allow Missing Middle homes citywide. Read why and how you can get involved: tempeyimby.org/2025/02/17/s...

NEW: The Starter Homes Act would give more Arizonans a path to homeownership. Read our latest piece explaining how this bipartisan legislation works and what you can do to advocate for it. tempeyimby.org/2025/02/09/t...

Donald Shoup passed. He was my doctoral advisor, and just one of the best people you could know (and his wife Pat is a delight). Don was unique in academia and planning: he was a late bloomer (another inspiration to me) and he changed the world. I'll share two things. parkingreform.org/donald-shoup/

We will be at Saltfire Brewing Co. at 7 PM this Tuesday! Swing by for food, drinks, and discussion about upcoming opportunities to support pro-housing measures in Tempe and at the state level.

I'm deeply saddened to share that Donald Shoup passed away last night. He was the ideal academic—curious, methodical, and concerned with turning ideas into real-world change. TAing his parking course these past few years has one of the greatest honors of my life. Rest in peace, Shoup Dogg.

Going to hear lots of misinformation from Cities about the Starter Homes Act today. Let’s remember that some cities have historically used their planning processes to displace entire communities, expedite gentrification and hide profit motives for big business under the guise of “public input”.

If you live in Arizona, your legislators need to hear from you in support of SB 1229, the Starter Homes Act. This legislation provides Arizonans with a path to homeownership by removing barriers to building more affordable homes. tempeyimby.org/contact-your...

Allowing small-lot starter homes would give more Arizona families a path to homeownership and spur the production of badly needed housing. Let your legislators know you support the Starter Homes Act!

ICYMI: Tempe has now legalized ADUS, but the next test will be how the mayor and council implement Missing Middle housing. In our latest piece, we make the case that they should meet the moment and allow Missing Middle across Tempe. tempeyimby.org/2025/01/16/t...

NEW: Tempe has finally legalized ADUs across the city. What's next? Tempe will expand where missing middle housing can be built. It's an opportunity for the city to seriously tackle the housing crisis, but only if we go beyond what the state now requires. tempeyimby.org/2025/01/16/t...

(He’s right)

We have a few upcoming events over the next few months, starting with a letter writing event this Thursday at 7 PM! All are welcome—we'd love to see faces new and old as we begin another year of working towards housing abundance.

NEW: Under SB 1162, Arizona cities must now publish reports on their housing shortages, but omissions and inconsistencies abound. We examined the housing reports we've been able to find so far in our latest piece. tempeyimby.org/2025/01/08/a...

🧵Per new state law, AZ cities were required to report a 5-year Housing Needs Assessment yesterday. They must also publish a report with the number of units being approved and steps taken to meet housing needs. We're tracking the reports we've been able to find here: tempeyimby.org/tracking-ari...

U.S. cities have been held back by car-centric planning for too long. But as cities recognize the need for zoning reform, there are opportunities to build neighborhoods that prioritize community connections over empty parking lots.

Housing research all policymakers should read, from @sightline.org: "The findings add to a growing body of evidence that making off-street parking optional is a small policy change that can lead to an abundance of new homes." www.sightline.org/2024/12/10/p...

NEW: Work by Salim Furth and @sid-kap.bsky.social shows that Tempe hasn't responded to the Census Building Permit Survey (BPS) 36 times over the past three years. This is a key source to measure how much housing is being permitted — and it impacts federal funding. tempeyimby.org/2024/12/19/t...

There are a number of Arizona cities who hide behind "local control" to shirk their responsibility to build housing and avoid changing exclusionary policies which have worsened the housing crisis. Sedona is far from the only place with this mentality.

Local land-use laws are huge barriers not just for transitional housing in Tucson but also for many types of badly-needed housing across Arizona.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Cities which have made it easier to build abundant housing are seeing improved affordability.

Last night, following the mandate of a new state law, Tempe just passed a sweeping ADU ordinance by a 6-0 margin This is huge news for housing availability in the city, and is just the beginning!

At a zoning board meeting the phrase “we’ve eliminated all school aged children” was just uttered in DEFENSE of a project.

Looking for something to do this week? Wednesday - 7 PM: We’ll be having our monthly happy hour at Saltfire Brewing Co. Thursday - 6 PM: City Council will hold its second and final meeting on updating Tempe’s ADU code. We hope to see you all there!

Hey folks! We're Tempe YIMBY, fighting for affordable and abundant housing in Tempe (Arizona's best city).
