Speaking as a messy book guy myself, yeah, it's a bit of a cluster. The main contributor to this perception is that you have many books shoved in flat or stacked in places where they could easily be upright. You could fix that in, like, five minutes and be 95% of the way to bookshelf beauty.

He doesn't need to please the unwashed masses--they can't vote for him anymore. And he's never cared whether his positions are right, wrong, inconsistent, or incoherent, as long as they get him where he wants. Nor does he want to have to work or think. At this point, it's all golf and grift.

Besides being a regular on Fox, Hegseth was an occasional advisor to Trump during his first go-round (and was the guy who urged Donald to pardon soldiers convicted of war crimes). So, it's likely just a matter of Trump saying, "I like this guy; let's give him a job."
