I've mentioned it before, although I have a new addendum to add: The painting that ICO's Japanese cover is based on, "Tropique du Cancer", was painted by Ramsès Younan, who was taking clear inspiration from Giorgio de Chirico and other surrealist-esque painters of the era, such as Salvador Dalí.
