keeping a silent HLS/MSE stream going on the side seems to magically fix things. something regular <audio> elements didn't accomplish. somehow convinces android there's background media that needs to be kept alive?

tried using a WakeLock even though it's a drastic measure (also keeps the screen on unnecessarily) - but it doesn't work. screen turns off as normal, wakelock is released, network requests start failing shortly after.
