one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

they get it. good for them.

Must-read thread here:

Spring is always quite the roller coaster.

If only more of our elected leaders co-signed this letter.

Rich people's property is always well protected by taxpayer money. Poor people's bodies, not so much.

ICE arresting British tourists now. www.brokenfrontier.com/bring-becky-...

I cannot believe how many Dem leaders are failing the “It is wrong to kidnap people for exercising free speech” test.

Honestly this is the end of the great American experiment Once the first amendment falls the rest are not far behind Holy crap

@schiff.senate.gov I have not seen a statement from you on Mahmoud Khalil. And now we have a British cartoonist being held in detention. Where is the leadership? What are you doing about this? It is anti-democratic to the core. www.comicsbeat.com/cartoonist-r...

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortex condemned ICE’s detainment of Mahmoud Khalil, calling it a “tyrannical” move. “If the federal government can disappear a legal US permanent resident without reason or warrant, then they can disappear US citizens too."

Mike Braun is yet another governor with no ideas for Indiana's small towns except to let them keep dying. Great analysis from @profhicks.bsky.social.

Trump’s agenda was never about deporting “illegal” immigrants. It was always about absolute control over the makeup of the American population—he believes he can decree that any immigrant is “illegal” by whim, at will. Don’t for a second assume you’re safe just because you were born here either.

The United States government just disappeared a lawful US resident because it didn't like his speech. You should care about this because it shouldn't happen to anyone, but you should also care because it could happen to you. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/09/n...

"Randall hosted a morning town hall Saturday in Bremerton that filled up in minutes. Rather than turning the overflow crowd away, she immediately held a 2nd session. 'I want to hear from everyone who took the time out of their day to be here,' she wrote online..." www.advocate.com/politics/hug...

Kinda simple.

Facts. Numbers. Data. Guess who’s as much all-hat-no-cattle as #MadKingDonnie? #elmo

“Even a first-year law student knows that the federal government cannot dictate the viewpoint and curriculum of a private Christian school, yet here was a federal prosecutor opening an inquiry into a Jesuit school’s protected speech.” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/09/o...

Exactly. Why trade away without a fight your personal rights, as well as the fabric of a 250-year-old democracy? That’s hardly “the art of the deal.“ 🙄🤬

“Those nasty Canadians are ripping us off and are controlled by Mexican cartels. They’re poisoning us with fentanyl and need to become the 51st state or they will pay a high price” is a belief that literally ZERO Americans had six weeks ago. It’s entirely invented from scratch.

I stopped being an A's fan because of John Fisher, but I'm still a fan of Lawrence Butler. Happy for him, and I do hope one day he'll be remembered in the same breath as Dave Stewart, Rickey Henderson and other franchise greats.

Very topical in this day and age!

Doesn't sound good to me.

Taking action for justice takes courage, wisdom & spiritual grounding. How do we discern when & how to act? How do we prepare for risk while staying true to our values? Rev. Elizabeth Nguyen’s resource offers guidance for accountable action. 💡 bit.ly/4i6T7sA #Justice #Liberation #UU

Very late to this game, but loving "The Wire" on Max. Almost through Season 1!

Go Hoosiers! Great atmosphere by the #iubb fans who came to Mackey.

Things are not OK, and the sooner we stop deluding ourselves that it is, the better.

Yup.

What does this have to do with "free markets and personal liberties"?

436 pitches! By one pitcher, in one game!

O ... M ... G !!!

That's not good. Hoping Reneau is OK.

Totally classless, crude -- and also unimaginative -- chant at Assembly Hall by #iubb student section. Do better.

The BBC is quite correct.

Truth!

Flapping! 😂
