I think card catalogs and phone books both definitely shaped the way we learned to think about search engines, compared to kids now. AND I also think the colloquial way we discuss search engines (I.e., "Google it") has implications to kids we don't realize.

Yes, I’ve had times when I asked a student where they got an image (because they needed to cite the image source) and they responded “from Google.” I wonder if us older folks have the concept of a card catalog in the back of our minds, and that’s how we (some of us) approach search engines?

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.
