Happy IWD to everyone except the Vice Chancellor of ANU whose corrupt and incompetent management of the institution has meant that the “remarkable female leaders” she celebrates, including myself, wake up every day not knowing if we will even have a job in the coming weeks #VoteNoConfidence #ANU

CFP closing next week for #AusSTS2025! Don't miss this 🔥 list of plenary speakers including Warwick Anderson Kari Lancaster Ranjodh Dhaliwal Singh Fabian Offert Dang Nguyen Kate Mannel Chris O'Neill Elizabeth Stephens Jaya Keaney & more!! Deadline 14 March

Here at the @nteuact.bsky.social rally at ANU to protest the shameful cuts to our university! Up to 630 jobs slated to go under this manufactured crisis. Staff say ❌NO❌ to this Vice-Chancellor and her so-called "cybernetic leadership" (read: same old liberal managerialism) 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

Very happy to see this piece on Anticipatory Automated Mobilities from @pinkydigital.bsky.social and me out in the world! It's the introduction to a special issue on the same topic. Full issue coming soon! @admscentre.org.au www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

“If Silicon Valley’s approach to AI has been to move fast and break things, then our mission as academics is to approach it in a different way.” ADM+S Affiliate @thaophan.bsky.social joins ANU reporter Luis Pérez to discuss the ripple effects of unregulated #AI under Trump’s administration.

My two cents on AI & DEI featured in the ANU Reporter today ⬇️ “If it’s not safe for some of us then it’s not safe for any of us. But this is not the world we have to live in with AI...They may no longer value diversity, equity or inclusion but we still can." reporter.anu.edu.au/all-stories/...

Much looking forward to this online talk with @thaophan.bsky.social on "Testing-in-the-wild: innovation nationalism and the colonial dynamics of new technology testbeds" at 9am on Tuesday 21st January 2025. Read more and register here: www.centrefordronesandculture.com/events/testi...

Delighted that @thaophan.bsky.social will be speaking online at @cfi-cambridge.bsky.social Centre for Drones & Culture on Tuesday 21/ 9am BST about this fantastic project about Australia as a site for the testing of drone delivery trials. V compelling work. Details below.

“I'm earning less that I did when I was 14 at McDonalds”, says PhD candidate Alexandra Paton. #RaiseTheStipend www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01...

I am hiring a postdoc! Excellent research support, minimal teaching load, and an overall wonderful set up. The research focus is flexible as long as some part of your practice involves critical making or hands-on research in some form. (1/3)

Happening next week! Join me online for this seminar on innovation nationalism and the colonial dynamics of new technology testbeds. I'll be discussing findings from my latest research on drone delivery testbeds in Australia. Link to register ⬇️ www.centrefordronesandculture.com/events/testi...

"it is a habit of non-indigenous people to rush to FN people in times of crisis and ask them to solve problems not of their making. FN rights and knowledge are ignored until 'we' have a crisis" 💯💯💯

Thinking of all my friends & colleagues living through the LA fires right now. A good 🧵 from @tdneale.bsky.social reminding us that quick tech fixes for "solving" wildfires (e.g. drones, satellites, AI models) can't give us what we really need, i.e. radical change to deal w flammable landscapes

Hello, so, I'm an anthropologist who has studied wildfires for over a decade and, just recently, handed in a book manuscript for peer review on the pathologies of wildfire management in Australia and, to a lesser extent, Canada and the US. It's called "How to Control Fire" (TBC).

This paper and the rest of the special issue look terrific. Great to see a growing STS literature on generative AI that isn't playing to computer science rules.

'What happens when invisual and arguably inhuman modes of production brush up against all-too-human concepts like race?' So thrilled to see this article w @zentralwerkstatt.org finally out in @jdsr.bsky.social

In my latest piece for @science.org, I ask how we should think about experiments that take place outside the lab. It begins here, in St Ives, Cornwall. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

One thing in this that isn't remarked on is Wing drones are really noisy! It would be a total drag to live in a neighborhood with ever present drone deliveries. This film is definitely worth your time if you have interest in commercial drone, though.

👇 This short documentary video 📹 on drone delivery in Logan, Aus, is a must 🔥

I love this mini-ethnography of the drone delivery capital of the world. Come for the drones; stay for the story about the guy throwing tuna cans at an armed robber.

Yes, I warmly recommend this short film on drones. Enjoyable critique, fun, annoying, plus featuring drones 🛸 - what more can you want? 👇

This video is such a wonderful example of STS in action. Not just the research behind it, but the filmmaking and the storytelling. The kicker in the second half is set up so well. Massive congrats to @thaophan.bsky.social vimeo.com/1013048120

Watch this great documentary report and understand what “AI” looks like from the ground, in Logan Australia. Actually, it is not just looks, but also sharp commentary, including on the retail model, and magical twins to boot!

As an addendum to this🧵: I'm giving a talk (online) on drone delivery trials and the long history of science and technology testing in Australia next Jan for the Centre for Drones and Culture. Thanks to @amygaeta.bsky.social for the invite! www.centrefordronesandculture.com/events/testi...
