Alt text, people. Use. Alt. Text. I have stopped reposting things if there is no alt text. Unless you are happy saying you don't think people who need alt text deserve to be as well informed as everybody else, use alt text. Thanks.

“Be Wary of Accessibility Guarantees from Anyone” adrianroselli.com/2025/03/be-w... Sort of an updated version of my 2016 post. #accessibility #a11y

When using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, don't just make text bigger and bolder to make it a heading. That will work for sighted users, but screen reader users will miss that and just hear it as normal paragraph text. Use actual heading styles, like level 1 through 6.

URGENT: The House is set to vote tomorrow on whether to advance $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid — eviscerating essential programs that provide lifesaving services for people with disabilities, children, seniors, and more. Tell your representative now: Don't cut Medicaid.

Accessibility-focused job interview questions can cover much than just reciting specifications. These questions compiled by Scott O'Hara can be helpful for those conducting job interviews, as well as for those prepping to be interviewed. scottaohara.github.io/accessibilit...

It's weird as a biologist to say "ignore the science part" but here we are Science: Vaccines don't cause autism. BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER. If vaccines caused autism I would still recommend them. Dying of preventable disease is bad. Autism isn't a disease and most of the "bad" of autism is society.

Today, Trump issued an Executive Order saying that the administration would be establishing a commission to attempt to lower the prevalence of autism and chronic health conditions. ASAN will be joining efforts to push back against its harmful ideas and policies.

This is fascinating. I’ll have to experiment with this soon!

You can be proudly and openly autistic and disabled And you can also experience true rejection and pain when doing so. They’re not mutually exclusive.

Is it normal for a Windows laptop to go to sleep and then become so unresponsive the computer looks dead? Like only a hard restart will bring it out? I’ve had five Windows work laptops over the years, running Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows 11, and all of them have done this.

The Alabama Attorney General, along with many others from red states, has joined the lawsuit Texas v. Becerra that would end Section 504. Use the link below to read more about what Section 504 is and to contact your state attorney general.

Automatic captions make it difficult to watch videos because the viewer is forced to decipher misspelled or mistranslated words that appear in a string of text without any punctuation. These can be distracting and disorienting. Always edit your captions before publishing.

Disabled vets struggled to qualify for housing assistance because HUD counted disability benefits as income. Today, the House passed the Housing Unhoused Disabled Veterans Act to change this. As an original co-sponsor, grateful we’re closer to getting more vets housing.

Sighted users often use bold or large fonts to create the appearance of headings in documents. People using screen readers have no way of understanding these visual cues. Use heading styles from the styles menu to correctly format headings.

As you share Super Bowl images, memes, screen shots, and more on social media, don't forget alt text. Adding alt text helps everyone using a screen reader, whether they are blind, have low-vision, have a cognitive disability, etc. #SuperBowl #SuperBowl2025

Don't wait to stand up for disability rights until you become disabled yourself

Judge rules that Black church in DC, which won a $2.8 million default judgment against the Proud Boys, now gains control over the trademark “Proud Boys.” The far-right group is barred from selling any related merchandise or symbols without the consent of the church. Gift link:

I can’t even keep up with the dumpster fire our current administration has been for disabled people — accessibility rollbacks, misinformation, harmful stereotyping, etc. What worries me is that future administrations may try to fix some of the overall mess but forget the disabled.

If a Democratic official was doing even a quarter of what the Trump/Musk administration is doing, Republicans would be losing their collective minds, and rightfully so. They’ve blown up over things that didn’t actually happen, so the silence now is telling.

Include disabled people in your resistance planning. In many ways we’re built for resistance, as we have to find creative and sustainable ways to survive every single day. This is the time for intersectionality and community care. We need to work together and save one another.

Don't buy into the myth that "accessibility is only about adding alternative text to images." Alt text is important, of course. But there is so much more to accessibility, including headline structure, functional controls, color contrast, link text, plain language, and more.

Just to say it: Diversity is a good thing. Equity is a good thing. Inclusion is a good thing. Accessibility is a good thing.

I was talking to an older gentleman once, and he was relating a story about a schoolteacher he had. At the beginning of the school year, this teacher would pick one of the tougher-looking boys, grab him by the hair, and she’d pin him to the wall to demonstrate her strength. (Cont)

Look y’all. If someone slipped into my Venmo and paid off my remaining car payments, I’m not saying I’d name the car after them, but I’m also not saying I wouldn’t.

Trump’s Immigration Raids Now Targeting… Native Americans? Nothing says “protecting the border” like detaining Indigenous people and demanding proof of citizenship. At least 15 Native Americans in NM and AZ have been questioned or detained. This is what happens when quotas matter more than justice.

The upsides of the executive orders that adversely touch on #accessibility are: 1. They only affect federal offices and not private companies, and 2. They can’t negate state or international accessibility laws or their enforcement. This means at least digital accessibility should not get worse.

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs. However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!

Forget gimmicks and go-kart tracks, an extra 10cm on a cabin door would be a cruise ship game changer, says wheelchair-using agent Deanne Moses-Wright https://www.ttgmedia.com/business-advice/i-became-a-cruise-agent-to-advocate-for-accessibility-from-within-the-industry #a11y

Headings serve as landmarks for users and help them understand how different pieces of information relate to each other. For example, a section with a level 3 headings probably provides information in support of information provided in the previous level 2 heading, and so on.

ASAN wants to change the conversation that we, as a society, have about gun violence and people with mental health disabilities. Misinformation and stereotypes hurt some of the most marginalized people in our society. We can do better.

Vaccines do not cause autism. Keep saying things that have been demonstrated by robust science and are the subject or organised disinformation. Don’t just ignore the attempts to brainwash. #academicsky

I don’t know a single disabled person who had any type of assistance “handed out” to them. I do, however, know of countless disabled people who need to prove their permanent disability every year with seemingly endless paperwork and hardly get by.

A transcript is the only way to make video or audio content accessible to someone who is both deaf and blind. Transcripts can be converted into braille, to be read on a refreshable braille output device.
