Gonna play and only say phrases which could be interpreted both positively or negatively just to make it worse.
“Wow.”
“Really?”
“Crazy”

“completely unsupervised child” - still how I feel

Only complaint with Majestic is that I can't get any really aggressive sounds out of it (and Hollywood has some good rips, sfz, etc) but the base is solid.

I spent a long time working with different keyswitches on Hollywood but couldn't really come up with anything I liked. Majestic Horn basically did this right out of the box.
I'm sure Hollywood can sound better than I've been able to get out of it so far but I don't think I'm going to keep trying

yep, i’m trying to at least get micing right before i commit to any takes. intuitively anything after can be fixed post recording. but i made a mistake by first judging the diff mic positions at a low vol. level instead of after full processing; everything but 6in away had too much mic noise at -6db

Your tone on the album sounds great! I’m also mixing classical against other instruments so I use your album as a reference. When I get budget I want a pair of Line Audio CM4s but for this album I’m making do with dynamic mics and a quiet guitar. About to start experimenting with a two mic setups

I think it keeps happening because they're both strongly bimodal, I honestly kind of use them in the same way

Turns out that once i had to boost all the way to proper listening volume this was wrong. Too much noise even from a 1ft away mic. I have to close mic it and then just not play anything too harsh and spiky (though some compression helps with some of that)

on the off chance that anybody is interested, you can hear the same 12 second phrase repeated ten times in different mic positions and interface settings and no other processing, and tell me which sounds the best

I didn’t hear much of a difference between overhead and front positioning in isolation but I wonder if double micing will just make it sound more full anyway

I will retest it when I get another mic cable and clip to test double micing like he does here: youtu.be/gJf3Us9l0uc
I tried a bit further away like in this vid but steel string just projects better so it works but doesn’t in a softer classical

I submit proof that I learned to do this, mostly as reference in case I forget later.

I should not have blamed the VSTs so quickly: apparently the demo for Metaphor: ReFantazio takes up as much space as all of them put together and I just never noticed how close I was already.

I was thinking of doing this same thing just yesterday 😂
I’ll probably do it after this week’s ends

When it comes to exploring towns in rpgs, I leave nothing uncovered. I guess you could say I go to town

It's a pizzicato upright, and I let it decay rather than sustain throughout, so it's a bit easy to miss. You can mostly just hear it on beat 1 of each measure, and sometimes beat 4.

I definitely don't mind the advice. Here a sense of unevenness is what I'm going for, to make it feel like the sea monster is rocking the boat you're on. However most of what I want is prob coming from how the gtr and picc flurry rhythms are offset, and making your change may not interfere

One drawback is me looking at these classical guitar parts I wrote before and thinking “there is no way in hell I can play that”
