FOLLOWUP: Apparently it WAS playtested, and the pre-playtest rules were even more broken. -.-

Anyhoo, for myself, I'm retooling DangerMan so that hopefully he can be a little more effective, but I'm also super-disappointed in the game system. It has very production values... but doesn't seem to have ever been playtested. O.o It's half-baked at best.

It's not just player-made characters who are effected this way, but the game's premades are just as screwed by it. Daredevil, as written, can barely touch Shocker but would get one-punched by him. When Daredevil is a useless character, you know your game is broke. :P

A Rank 2 character whose only powers are Mighty 2, Sturdy 2, and Blazing Fast Fists, can easily take out an army, yawning the whole time, and emerge untouched because normal soldiers literally cannot hurt them. A Rank 2 character with none of those, will struggle against a handful of henchmen.

If you're going to build a system on that basis, you need to make sure the rules prevent that NOT being the case. Damage floors and ceilings, not having "auto success/auto fail" powers, or even just WELL MARKED GUIDELINES and multiple ways to hit the expected minimums should be your baseline.

Our party lucked into having a character who could "turn off" Shocker's abilities for a turn, which was the only reason we won that fight. But what if Broken Girl and Spoiler Man had different builds or were not in the party? Alternatively, what if the party was ALL Broken Girls and Spoiler […]

I can only imagine how difficult it would be to come up with balanced encounters for this game. In last night's session, for example, only two of the players could do LITERALLY ANY DAMAGE to Shocker, because of the busted way damage multipliers and damage resistance work.

MMRPG on the other hand, starts with the premise that every character of any given rank should be roughly the same power level; and yet all it takes is taking one or two broken abilities and suddenly you have Edge on all attacks, multiple actions in a round, free run of the board, and do […]

FREX, in one game I ran, one of the players built a "pulp era" hero a la the Spider or Zorro, coming to a total of 100-ish points, in a game where 250 points was the baseline. So what happened? First battle, he got trounced. But that's because he deliberately brought a level 1 character to a […]

Much as I love CHAMPIONS, it was certainly possible to break it too, but it took some effort and going against the game's recommendations. MMRPG feels like they slapdash wrote a bunch of rules and never had a min-maxer look at it to find gotchas.

Fortunately Plots is very flexible about allowing character retools, and so I've put together some ideas on ways he can play at the table the way he should play in my head. Hopefully the next session will be smoother for DangerMan!

@Blahmage The story isn't level-gated to my knowledge, but when the macguffin is standing behind three level 12 mobs and you're level 4, it might as well be. XD
