ā¦or itās the first time youāre seeing it because it aired before or after your particular generational era of watching programming for kids, thereās plenty here to enjoy.
Rest in peace, Michelle Trachtenberg.

In her memory, check out āTruth or Scareā for yourself.

To children and teenagers, everyone beyond the age of 20 seems so abundantly old, but once you pass that threshold yourself, you realise with every passing year how wrong that perception is.
Michelle Trachtenberg was only 39, and thatās no age at all.

To my young eyes, Michelle Trachtenberg seemed so worldly and cool and mature; yet in objective reality, she was also still a kid, a teenager only 8 years older than me.

And all the while, the show was anchored by Trachtenbergās preternaturally excellent hosting skills, bringing a sense of fun, wit, and a sly delight in spooking the kids watching the show every episode with such introductions to the world of the macabre.

(The Dracula episode was where I first saw clips of the eponymous bloodsucker as played by Christopher Lee, and Gary Oldman, and those images absolutely frightened me to no end.)

ā¦it nonetheless still frequently scared the bejesus out of me with its explorations of spooky folklore & supernatural horror, the recreations it would stage of scary stories from reality, & the clips it used from various movies I was too young to watch beyond their brief glimpses in the show.

ā¦āIce Princessā, āMysterious Skinā, āBlack Christmas (2006)ā, and most formatively, her time hosting the Discovery Kids show, āTruth or Scareā.
At the time āTruth or Scareā aired, I wouldāve been around 10 years old, and though it was aimed at an audience of childrenā¦

ā¦yet for me, having not watched āBuffyā for myself until long after it ended (though of course I knew she was in the show while it originally aired), I happened to grow up being acquainted with Trachtenberg more from the likes of her role as Penny in the live action āInspector Gadgetā movieā¦

Had to look up what the context for this was, andā¦ yeeeeeah, knee-jerk defending Neil Gaiman right about now certainly isnāt a good look. (And I also found that Kaufmanās previously defended Harry Knowles after the allegations against him came out, so an ugly pattern seems to be formingā¦)

For anyone wondering, some possible dog names have survived from cuneiform sources.
On tiny dog figurines found buried under a palace in Nineveh, Iraq are inscriptions that seem to be names.

It used to be on YouTube - which is the one I linked to when I wrote about this version of the film here: jackandersonkeane.substack.com/p/dune-1984-... - but it got taken down from there at some point. Luckily, it's still up on the Internet Archive, so here it is. š

If you can find it, I recommend tracking down the Spicediver fan-edit cut of Lynchās āDuneā. The theatrical version chopped his vision up into quite a mess, which is what made him insist on always getting final cut forever after. The Spicediver cut extends, enriches, and redeems his vision.
