The situation is different, yes. What I find frustrating is that the international community canāt do anything about it when a government turns on its own citizens, unless a cival war breaks out and war crimes are committed. I understand sovereignty is important, but surely more should be possible?

Correct. But there was and is no law that prohibits governments to put people in camps. That was what the Germans tried to use in their defense. I donāt think the existence of the camps were ever contested, but the treatment of people (and stripping of rights) was what got them convicted.

Um, that was exactly my point? Plus that this is a legal issue internationally and can thus happen everywhere in the world at any time. Measures to avoid this from ever happening again should have been taken decades ago, was all I was saying. I donāt think we disagree.

The crux of the argument is that many rights apply to individuals but not to (large) groups. We put refugees in camps at our borders everywhere and can (legally) hold them there for years, even though they broke no law. Countries are wary of big groups of immigrants so nobody feels like fixing this.

Now Arendt was a political scientist and Agamben a philosopher, and obviously what happened in the camps were and are war crimes, legally. But Arendtās and especially Agambenās point about the international legal twilight zone of immigrants/refugees still not being resolved is a very valid one IMO.

I refer to what I read in The Banality of Evil, The Origins of Totalitarianism, and Homo Sacer. I read them in translation, and the word count here makes nuance difficult. But concentration camps existed before and after the Nazis and there are still legal gaps in statelessness that allow for it.

Ja nu is het te laat, de geest is nu uit de fles. Dit had ergens in de afgelopen 30 jaar geregeld moeten worden, vĆ³Ć³rdat de betreffende vage stichtingen in het kabinet kwamen. Ze gaan zichzelf en hun inkomsten nooit niet wegstemmen, natuurlijk.

Er bestaat al een wet dat politieke partijen alleen donaties mogen accepteren van privƩ-personen, bedrijven mogen niet doneren. Dit was een naoorlogse reactie op de NSDAP (door grootindustriƫlen aan de macht geholpen). Die wet poogt te voorkomen wat nu gebeurt: politieke inmenging door bedrijven.

Een opera moet niet alleen via het libretto en de muziek, maar ook via de kostuums en de decors het verhaal uitbeelden. Vind al die āmoderne interpretatiesā echt 10x niks, helemaal zonder koor en/of ballet. Doe het goed of doe het niet. Maar dit is wellicht meer een pet peeve/ergernis dan snobisme

This is even funnier when you know that Emperor Franz Joseph ate really fast and Empress Sisi hardly ate anything at all, so dinner guests often left the table hungry because etiquette dictated you had to stop eating when the royal couple did. 1/2
